The Worst of Times: How Life on Earth Survived Eighty Million Years of Extinctions, by Paul B. Wignall

Two hundred and sixty million years ago, life on Earth suffered wave after wave of cataclysmic extinctions, with the worst--the end-Permian extinction--wiping out nearly every species on the planet. The Worst of Times delves into the mystery behind these extinctions and sheds light on the fateful role the primeval supercontinent, known as Pangea, may have played in causing these global catastrophes.

Drawing on the latest discoveries as well as his own firsthand experiences conducting field expeditions to remote corners of the world, Paul Wignall reveals what scientists are only now beginning to understand about the most prolonged and calamitous period of environmental crisis in Earth's history. He describes how a series of unprecedented extinction events swept across the planet in a span of eighty million years, rapidly killing marine and terrestrial life on a scale more devastating than the dinosaur extinctions that would come later. Wignall shows how these extinctions--some of which have only recently been discovered--all coincided with gigantic volcanic eruptions of basalt lavas that occurred when the world's landmasses were united into a single vast expanse.

Unraveling one of the great enigmas of ancient Earth, The Worst of Times also explains how the splitting apart of Pangea into the continents we know today ushered in a new age of vibrant and more resilient life on our planet.

Review
"[Wignall] presents a sound examination of an 80-million-year span, which began nearly 260 million years ago, that is considered by scientists to have been the most extreme extinction event in the Earth's history. . . . [A] great example of scientific sleuthing."--Publishers Weekly

"[An] excellent introduction to the latest thinking about this key period in Earth's history. . . . Wignall's book is enthralling."--Matthew Cobb, New Scientist

"In this scholarly but accessible analysis, geologist Wignall explores the perfect storm of cataclysms, plate tectonics and other forces that led to 'The Great Dying'--and the rebound of life in its aftermath."--Gemma Tarlach, Discover magazine

"Well written and persuasive."--Choice

From the Back Cover

"We often think of extraterrestrial impacts, such as the one that killed off the dinosaurs, as the primary cause of mass extinction. But in this elegantly written book, Paul Wignall cites large volcanic eruptions as the most likely cause of several earlier mass extinctions, and offers a cogent analysis of why, since the Jurassic, such eruptions have posed less of a threat to life on Earth."--David J. Bottjer, University of Southern California

"Wignall covers everything from volcanic eruptions and the carbon cycle to climate reconstruction and the possible role the Pangea supercontinent may have played in these devastating events. This is a story well told."--Michael J. Benton, author of The History of Life: A Very Short Introduction

"Wignall does a wonderful job of describing the mass extinctions from the Middle Permian through the Jurassic. His personal contributions to this field have been influential, and it is great fun to read about the subject through his eyes and the experiences of his research team. I really enjoyed this informative and entertaining book."--Jonathan Payne, Stanford University

Fascinating story of the near wipe-out of life on Earth
By Anthony Toole
Looked at broadly, there have been five major extinction events in the history of life on Earth, with long stretches of relative stability between, in which evolution filled the emptied niches. The most devastating event, which destroyed almost all life on the planet occurred at the end of the Permian period, some 252 million years ago. The previous major extinction, which concluded the Devonian, had taken place more than 100 million years earlier, while the next ended the Triassic, fifty million years later. After that, life flourished for a further 135 million years, until the gigantic Chicxulub meteorite set off the train of events that led to the disappearance of the dinosaurs, 65 million years ago.

In detail, however, the picture becomes much more complex. Recent research, much of it carried out during the past decade, reveals that over a period of 80 million years, spanning the latter part of the Permian and the whole of the Triassic, the earth suffered no fewer than six extinctions. The question this fascinating book sets out to answer is, What combinations of conditions caused this devastating series over such a relatively short geological time span?

The common factor in these extinctions appears to be volcanic activity on a vast scale, which continued for long periods, flooding the earth with enormous volumes of basalt. The probable effects of these on the atmospheric and ocean chemistries, and hence on living creatures, are discussed comprehensively, but in language that is minimally technical and very accessible.

Another question asks why several earlier and later volcanic eruptions of equal magnitude had very little effect on life, and did not lead to extinctions. The overall conclusion, for which the author argues persuasively, is that the Permian-Triassic devastations occurred because the dry land on Earth during that time was concentrated into a single mass, Pangea, which later broke up into the continents we know today.

This is an intriguing, even exciting story that is very well told, and more of it is likely to emerge with further discoveries over the coming years. Readers interested in the natural history and geology of our living planet will love this book, and will learn a great deal from it that is new.

Life on collision course with forces of nature
By Rama Rao
About 251 million years ago, life on planet earth was almost extinct. Most species were lost in a catastrophic event along with the loss of habitats for of most land and marine creatures. It took almost 100 million years for life to return to pre-existing level, and the biodiversity returned in the form of diverse marine creatures, insects, dinosaurs, mammals and plants. In this process, animals and plants took various shapes, sizes and habitats. In this book, University of Leeds professor, Paul Wignall examines the environment of Pangea when the planet was fused into one single super continent. Atmospheric and geological conditions were vastly different with few coastline habitats, limited rainfall, and the deeper part of the land uninhabitable. Huge volcanic eruptions resulted in catastrophic events that filled the atmosphere with carbon dioxide and covered the land with lava. Changes in atmospheric temperatures, acidification of the ocean and depletion of life-supporting oxygen made the planet very hostile for life. Eventually a slow and steady separation of the single land mass into five continents changed the planet’s atmosphere and created diverse environment. Species evolved in the reformed planet with a tremendous increase in diversity.

Recent studies have suggested that the asteroid that hit Yucatan Peninsula 65 million years ago also intensified volcanic eruptions in the Deccan Plateau of India. Volcanic eruptions became twice as intense, throwing out a deadly cocktail of sulfur dioxide and carbon dioxide. The shockwaves produced at this time shook up earth and its volcanic “plumbing systems” around the world, creating larger magma chambers that spewed out more material. This “combined effect” is now believed to be responsible for wiping out dinosaurs.

Sir Charles Lyell was the first geologist to propose, in the first half of the nineteenth century, that earth was formed after cataclysmic events on giant scale in the distant past. He observed that the earth was shaped by slow-moving forces still in operation today, but acting over for a very long period of time. This idea still holds good and it was quite bold for his time when it was believed in the idea of abrupt planetary changes that conforms to beliefs of the Book of Genesis.

While geological and paleontological studies have been helpful to understand the formation of a habitable planet such as earth, we are still a long way to account for all factors that shaped our world. This is especially critical when NASA is investigating life on exoplanets with vigor and enthusiasm. Professor Wignall’s seminal work in this area is fascinating and should encourage readers to get interested in this field and learn more about the ancient history of our planet.

Fascinating and insightful picture of plate tectonics and major extinction ...
By Lyle T. Hubbard, Jr.
Fascinating and insightful picture of plate tectonics and major extinction events of Late Mesozoic.
Clearly shows that geology is more than rocks, minerals and stratigraphy. For me it opened some interesting
analytical inferences re the relationships of tectonics and extinctions that made more clear what
happened beyond a mega-meteroic assault on our planet. Read it, then read it again!.

Steve Jobs, by Walter Isaacson

Featuring a new epilogue read by the author.

From the author of the best-selling biographies of Benjamin Franklin and Albert Einstein, this is the exclusive biography of Steve Jobs.

Based on more than 40 interviews with Jobs conducted over two years - as well as interviews with more than a hundred family members, friends, adversaries, competitors, and colleagues - Walter Isaacson has written a riveting story of the roller-coaster life and searingly intense personality of a creative entrepreneur whose passion for perfection and ferocious drive revolutionized six industries: personal computers, animated movies, music, phones, tablet computing, and digital publishing.

At a time when America is seeking ways to sustain its innovative edge, and when societies around the world are trying to build digital-age economies, Jobs stands as the ultimate icon of inventiveness and applied imagination. He knew that the best way to create value in the 21st century was to connect creativity with technology. He built a company where leaps of the imagination were combined with remarkable feats of engineering.

Although Jobs cooperated with this book, he asked for no control over what was written. He put nothing off-limits. He encouraged the people he knew to speak honestly. And Jobs speaks candidly, sometimes brutally so, about the people he worked with and competed against. His friends, foes, and colleagues provide an unvarnished view of the passions, perfectionism, obsessions, artistry, devilry, and compulsion for control that shaped his approach to business and the innovative products that resulted.

Driven by demons, Jobs could drive those around him to fury and despair. But his personality and products were interrelated, just as Apple's hardware and software tended to be, as if part of an integrated system. His tale is instructive and cautionary, filled with lessons about innovation, character, leadership, and values.

Gripping but amazingly incomplete
By David Dennis
This is a gripping journey into the life of an amazing individual. Despite its girth of nearly 600 pages, the book zips along at a torrid pace.

The interviews with Jobs are fascinating and revealing. We get a real sense for what it must have been like to be Steve, or to work with him. That earns the book five stars despite its flaws, in that it's definitely a must-read if you have any interest at all in the subject.

But there are places in the book where I have to say, "Huh?"

The book is written essentially as a series of stories about Steve. The book continuously held my interest, but some of the dramas of his life seem muted. For instance, he came close to going bust when both Next and Pixar were flailing. There was only the slightest hint that anything dramatic happened in those years. In one paragraph, Pixar is shown as nearly running him out of money. A few brief paragraphs later, Toy Story gets released and Jobs' finances are saved for good.

We hear a lot about Tony Fadell's role in the development of iPhone. Tony led the iPod group and was clearly a major source for the book. You may know from a recent Businessweek article that Tony was basically driven out of the company shortly after the final introduction of iPhone, due to personality conflicts between him and Scott Forestall, the person now in charge of iOS development. But the book doesn't say a word about it. Tony simply disappears from the rest of the book with no explanation, and Forestall is barely mentioned.

Another strange incident was the Jackling house, the house he spent a large part of his life in. A case could be made that the house is historic simply because Steve spent many of his formative years living in it. Preservationists were battling with him to save the house. Only a couple of months before his death, when he must have known he was not going to actually build a house to replace it, he had the house torn down. I would have loved to learn this story. Why did he buy it? Why did he destroy it through neglect? Why did he acquire such a blind loathing for it that he worked hard to get it torn down?

And why did Jobs keep almost all the Pixar options to himself? He doesn't seem to have needed the money, or even really wanted it that much. He could have cut his friends John Lasseter et al into their own huge fortunes. Lasseter only got about $25 million from Pixar, which seems like a shockingly low amount in view of his contributions. Now, it's not like they will starve or anything, and I think John can buy pretty much anything he wants, but it still seems surprising Jobs is so ungenerous.

There were a lot of things like this, incidents casually tossed away in a brief paragraph that should have merited an entire chapter.

I think this will always be the best account of the emotional aspects of Steve's life, which are fully covered. The chapters about his illness moved me to tears. But as an account of what really happened at Apple and how Steve fixed the company, it's insufficient. I guess that will have to await more distance from the subject.

Of course what's truly remarkable about Jobs is that he lived a life so full of incident that perhaps no biography has the space to cover the broad sweep of his life. He accomplished as much as 10 ordinarily famous men. Maybe the upshot is that you just can't fit a man like this in a book, even if that book's nearly 600 pages.

Story of the man who put a dent in the universe. Well worth reading.
By Dr. Chuck Chakrapani
Steve Jobs wanted to change the world, "put a dent in the universe." And he did. If you are interested in life and want to know how Jobs changed it right before our eyes, you should read this book.

No other book on Jobs has been based on first hand information from the Master himself, his colleagues and his detractors. There is no other way to know the man who changed the way we live and work. The fact that the book is engaging is a big bonus.

First Jobs' personal life, personality and beliefs. Like all fascinating people in history, Jobs was a bundle of contradictions. Born out of wedlock, he was an American icon and yet born of a Syrian Muslim whom he never knew, but had accidentally met. Adopted at birth by working class parents, he became skeptical of the Church as the all-knowing god did not help the starving children in Biafra and alternated between being a believer and a non-believer. He was, at different times, a vegan and a fruitarian (hence the name Apple). Jobs was influenced by the counter cultural ideas of the 60's and the 70's and yet become one of the most revered corporate figures of all time. He was a multi-billionaire who lived on a regular street with no high fenced compound, security or live-in servants; a Zen Buddhist who was obsessed with Zen-like simplicity but did not possess Zen-like tranquility; a son who tried to abandon his child like the way he had thought he was abandoned; a leader who was highly demanding of his colleagues and coworkers; a vastly influential figure in computing who neither built computers not wrote codes himself; a genius who was mean to many people. All these factoids had to have some influence on who he was and who he became and may keep interested psychologists busy for years. Yet, it is not for these tabloid fodder that he is looked upon with awe. To get caught up in the contradictions of a man is to miss the man.

So who is the man then? Isaacson presents Jobs life and work as a play in three acts.

During the first act, two unlikely partners named Steves (Jobs and Woz) create the world's first commercially viable personal computer, Apple II. Jobs then creates the revolutionary but unsuccessful Lisa. Apple goes public, Jobs creates the Mac, which carves itself a distinct niche. He then brings in Pepsi's Scully to manage the company only to find himself ousted from the company he founded. During his exile Jobs creates another revolutionary but not-so-successful computer NeXT. But Jobs other venture, Pixar, an outstanding animation company, is a huge commercial success.

The second act is Jobs' return to Apple. Apple was in decline and it buys the money losing NeXT. Job returns to the company he founded as the interim CEO. Introduces a series of products: peppermint colored iMacs followed b y 21st Century Macs.

The third act is the post-pc revolution, the most dramatic of all: the creation of ipod (almost 10 years ago to the day), paradigm-changing iphone and the category-creating ipad, along with many other things and cloud computing. We can't imagine a world today without ipads, ipods and iphones. The rewards are high. Apple first surpasses Microsoft and becomes the most valuable tech company. Then Apple becomes, for brief periods of time, the most valuable company in the world.

But this is not the story of Apple, but of Job. What was happening in the background while the three act play is being staged - to his family, his health, his odd beliefs that might have cost him his life, and his relationships with other giants of technology - is the focus of this book. The story is told with many interesting anecdotes such as Bill Gates incredulously exclaiming "Do ALL of you live here?" when visiting for the first time Steve Jobs' modest house.

This is an "authorized biography" and I'm wary of "authorized" biographies. Always thought they were full-length PR pieces. This one is different. Jobs gave Isaacson complete freedom to write the book and Jobs didn't demand editorial control. He didn't even want to see the book before it was published. And it shows. You see Jobs as he was. Warts and all. This is Jobs' last gift to those of us who admired his vision of the world, but wondered about the essence of the man behind it all. Now we know.

As you finish reading Job's biography of nearly 600 pages, something strikes you as odd. Steve Jobs' death is not mentioned in the book. Not the date, not the time and not even the fact that he is no more. Strangely fascinating. Like the man himself.

Extraordinary biography of a truly historical, one-of-a-kind man
By E. Kim
INTRODUCTION
Apple has always meant more to me than as a computer company, because of my early experiences in the late 1970's and early 1980's from age 8 using the Apple ][, //e, and later the Mac. They represented amazing products that I could understand even as a child, that this was the direction of the future. It was odd to me then, that the world was still embracing the MS-DOS command line interface and the IBM PC/AT machines. When in the late 1990's, Apple neared bankruptcy, with Microsoft Windows dominating the market, it taught me as a young man that companies that try to make the very best can be under appreciated by the masses, just as the adults near me in the 1980's could not see the amazing nature of my Apple //e and Mac back then. Good guys, it seemed, do finish last. It was disheartening.

Since the return of Steve Jobs to Apple, the world now knows of his genius and brilliance.

This biography is utterly amazing. I could not stop reading the entire biography and finished in less than 2 days.

WHAT I LIKED
1. Extraordinarily comprehensive - The book covers an immense number of different "phases" of his life from his famous adoption story to the start of Apple Computer, to NeXt, Pixar, love life, development of his iconic products, to the time before his death (although his death is actually never mentioned).
2. Ruthlessly objective - As a fan of Steve Jobs, I cringed at all the negative descriptions of Jobs's conduct with strangers, his management team, other CEO's, etc. I knew of his candor and lack of sensitivity towards others, but the degree to which this is depicted made me cringe and even wonder if Jobs should not be garnering so much world-wide respect. This sentiment was strong in the beginning of the biography, but by the end of the biography, I had actually become accustomed to Jobs's personality through the biography, almost as if I had personally known the man and adapted to him. The biography actually made me feel like I knew him.
3. Extraordinary historical perspective - Even if this biography were not to mention Steve Jobs, it would be fascinating. There is so much written about the history of Silicon Valley, other famous CEOs, musicians, artists, politicians, etc, that the book is enticing.
4. Extraordinary perspective on other famous leaders - Jobs spoke candidly about his opinions regarding virtually every important person that may have crossed his path. There are comments and stories regarding John Sculley, President Clinton, Obama, Bill Gates, Jeffrey Katzenberg (Disney), Michael Eisner (Disney), Bob Iger (Disney), Bono, Joan Baez, Bob Dylan, Yoko Ono, Steve Wozniak, Larry Ellison (Oracle), Eric Schmidt (Google), Larry Page (Google), Andy Grove (Intel), etc.
5. Extremely detailed descriptions of Jobs's business decision-making processes - This is true throughout the biography, but especially so towards the last third, where there is an extraordinarily detailed account by Jobs of his thought process during development of the iPod, iTunes, iPhone, iPad, and iCloud. In this latter third of the biography, whatever doubt may have existed of whether or not Jobs should be so revered is laid to rest when we witness his amazing decision-making ability.
6. Unexpectedly funny - Especially in the very beginning of the biography, you can't help but laugh when you read about John Sculley's first day at Apple and seeing Jobs sitting on a desk playing with his bare toes.
7. Jobs's personal life - This has always been an enigma and the most many knew of Jobs's personal life came from his 2005 Stanford commencement speech. We see into his early girlfriends' perspectives of Jobs, his current wife and children's perspective. The fascinating story of his biological parents, biological sister, daughter for whom he initially denied custody, three children and wife. There is much written about his perspective on Zen Buddhism and his trek to India.
8. Extremely detailed - For all the above points, there was an immense amount of detail that I never envisioned would exist in this biography.
9. Easy to read - The author makes reading each sentence effortless.

WHAT I DIDN'T LIKE
1. Not enough photos - The few photos that were included were great, but it left you wanting more.
2. Possibly too much of the negative aspects of Jobs's personality were described - No doubt that the man could belittle others, but there was so much emphasis of this especially in the beginning of the bio, that I wondered if the author didn't try too hard to make this point for fear of being accused of being too soft in his description of Jobs
3. Some very slight repetition in the very beginning of the biography from passages found in the middle and end of the biography.
4. I wished for more of Steve Jobs's perspective - Every now and then, the author would mention what Jobs thought of a certain past event but I wish there were more of those. So much of the biography read more like a history book trying to be objective and accurate, but I really wanted to know what Jobs thought about everything. I wanted his perspective more, even if it would make the book less objective.

CONCLUSION
This biography is amazing because of the subject matter, but it is also well-written. It seemed to be such an effort at objectiveness, however, that it actually lacked what I wanted to read most, which was Jobs's perspective. I appreciated the author's efforts and painting an accurate historical picture, but I really wanted to know what was on Jobs's mind regarding everything that was written about him. There was not enough of that, which is unfortunate, because it is in my opinion, his perspective that mattered the most.

Want a 4 or 5 on the exam? This book should be your first priority!
By Roohi Shamim
THE COURSE/EXAM:

World History AP, or WHAP, is a college level world history class that tests a student's ability to connect the fundamentals of history under principals such as culture, economy, and political aspects. Students will be required to do conceptual and analytical thinking to link different civilizations with one another. The purpose of this course is not to memorize dates and history, but rather to understand how all civilizations can be linked with TRENDS. You will be required to understand these trends in both the multiple choice and free response portion of the exam, unlike APUSH(AP US History), which requires a great deal of information retention.

At the end of the year, you will take the WHAP exam to determine your knowledge in the class. The exam is composed of 70 multiple choice questions worth 50% of the grade and 3 essays worth 50% of the grade together. The multiple choice questions test aspects of cultures and your knowledge of remembering their differences and similarities, such as How did _______ differ from ________ economically? The free response part has 3 essays: a Document Based Question, a Change over Time Question, and a Compare/Contrast Question. With each essay, you can score from a 0-9, which is based on a rubric I will post below. Getting a 5 on the exam means earning about 70-100% of the maximum allotted points, while a 4 is around 50-70%.

PRINCETON REVIEW:

My world history textbook was an absolute PAIN to read. As a result, I decided to purchase this book to supplement the overall experience for the class. And it helped: significantly.

The book starts off with more info about the WHAP test, such as what to expect and how to answer questions. Its key strategy is Process of Elimination, and it will provide examples to help explain how best to use it. ONE THING THAT HAS CHANGED AS OF 2011 IS THAT THERE IS NO MORE GUESSING PENALTY FOR THE TEST, SO FEEL FREE TO GUESS WITHOUT PENALTY. The huge chunk in the middle is like a secondary textbook, more on this later. The last part of the book contains 2 AP full length tests, in which I suggest you use one for a diagnostic and the second to test your skills.

If a WORLD HISTORY book makes me actually enjoy reading it, its obviously going to stick in my head better. And that is the magic of this book. Don't expect huge lengthy paragraphs on certain chapters; rather, information you will actually need for the test. The book is sprinkled with some comical effects that make it much more easier to understand. Also, there are small information boxes that let you connect places to places, the main focus I mentioned above. I highly recommended knowing these boxes like the back of your hand; you WILL need them for the exam.

The tests are probably the closest to College Board AP style as you will see in a reference book. Rather than asking for straight facts like some books I know, Princeton's uses an analytical basis for its questions just like the AP. Furthermore, there is an answer key at the end with useful explanations about the answers as well. In fact, the Princeton Review's tests are very close, if not HARDER, than the real test, so they are very valuable. I suggest saving them till the 2 weeks before the exam, when you are reviewing this book.

There are no primary resources in the book and no example essays, but I will remedy the 2nd part at least with a link below. Though the book does give guidelines on how to write the essays, it would be nicer to see actual ones along with commentaries. The lack of primary resources isn't that significant, but still noteworthy, as there are often questions in the multiple choice over historical documents.

One question I've been asked several times is if it is a good textbook replacement. Honestly, for the class itself, it's not enough. As stated above, the book will work wonders if you supplement it with a few notes of your own, but this shouldn't be your ONLY resource if you want to make an A in the class. I used online outlines to complement this book, and as a result got the A. What does this book work best as? A refresher. I can promise that nearing the time for the AP, I forgot many important details from the first semester. Thankfully though, this book let me recall names I had forgotten, such as Mamluk and the Hellenistic Era. It's good(actually, amazing) for the AP, as the AP doesn't require that much detail, but your teacher will most likely incorporate details this book won't cover.

This book is truly not the best for super essays, but decent for good(5 or 6/9) essays. When I took the essays for the actual exam, I can just say that I felt a little screwed. A 8 or 9/9 essay requires a LOT more detail than the book provides. For example, one of the 2010 essays was to describe changes over time in African religion systems. The book briefly covered this, but it was only about 1/2 page of info. YOU WILL NEED MORE FOR A BETTER ESSAY(more significantly so as it is 50% of the grade), so please do not rely on this book single-handedly.

The book will do wonders for preparing you for the MC portion of the AP. Compared to other prep books, this will at least ensure you a 3 or 4; the others about a 2 or 3. However, that one point difference to a 4 or 5 will require some action on your part, and I shall help you out by providing a few links below. The reason I am giving this book a 5 is because it was the only review book I used, and it, along with a few external notes, ensured me a 5 on the exam. And if I can get a 5, you can too!

ADVICE AND EXTERNAL LINKS:

If taking this class at school-
*Make sure to follow along what your teacher says. If you don't have a good teacher, I highly suggest look at online presentations.
*Add additional notes to the book that you may find helpful. Now remember. SPECIFIC Dates(you MUST at least know the basic time period)/REALLY MINOR details are not at all necessary for this class, so don't waste time doing so.
*It's important to understand the CHANGES OVER TIME in a society(Such as China) and COMPARING AND CONTRASTING two different societies (such as the Mongols and the Byzantines). I highly recommend creating a visual table for each of the societies involved in a time period on the basis of their customs, foreign policy, etc. etc.
*Don't take the practice exams until the few weeks before the exam. They are extremely valuable. When the time comes, time yourself accordingly and make sure to look at the explanations for why you got something right or wrong. Do you see any patterns in the questions you missed? If so, you may want to review the section in either your textbook or PR book.
*Hate the textbook and don't want to use it?! I know! Me neither! I used online outlines of the textbook, and it, along with this book, made my life a lot easier!
*Look at some of the tips below.

If you are self-studying this course-
*Read the textbook part of the book at least 2 or 3 times. Make sure to read the commentaries, they are break-or-make what you will see on the AP questions.
*Take some textbook quizzes at the website mentioned below (they are pretty close to AP level). Review the questions you got wrong and understand why you got them wrong.
*Take one practice test, and see how you do. Analyze the ones you got wrong. See any patterns? Review that chapter again in the book. If you guessed on any question, put a mark on it, so that your patterns aren't flawed. Repeat for Practice Test II.
*As you don't have a teacher to guide you on how to write the essays, I suggest this course of action. First, print out the grading rubric for all 3 essays so that you know how points are given and what you need to put on the essay. ENGLISH GRAMMAR IS NOT IMPORTANT(please do write it in English though!) and neither is spelling; don't waste precious time on that. Take a look at some of the free response questions at the website below, and practice them. Do you see any prompt that might be tricky for you? If you see many of these, you need another information supplement. Find some outlines online and review them. If you only have trouble with a few, review what your PR says.
*Start early, not the week before the exam, to ensure a 4 or 5.

General Advice for Exam-
*Don't be scared to BS(for the lack of a better word..). Essay graders can't penalize inaccuracy, so if you have NO IDEA what your essay is talking about, make it along rather than leaving it blank. Of course, use common sense please. Drawing a superman logo doesn't count as an essay, and neither does THIS IS SPARTAAAA.
*FEEL FREE TO GUESS ON QUESTIONS YOU DON'T KNOW. THE GUESSING PENALTY HAS BEEN REMOVED STARTING THIS YEAR.
*Bring a watch with you on test day to maintain a solid amount of time for each essay- around 40 minutes for each one.

LINKS: Please remove the spaces in the links

1st Link- All of the released Free Response Questions from previous exams. If you look to the right of them, you will see SAMPLES AND COMMENTARY, in which you can actually view EXAMPLE essays to those prompts along with the score they received, and why they received it. This is just as important as this book, so PLEASE do not ignore these. On the same link you can also view 30 ACTUAL multiple choice questions along with their answers. Also- for each year there is a SCORING GUIDELINE which you can use to grade your essays based on the 9 point system.

2nd Link- Textbook AP Styled practice exams

http ://college.cengage. com/history/world/bulliet/earth_peoples/2e/students/ace/index. html

3rd Link- Online Outlines/ More practice questions/ General Help. AMAZING WEBSITE which is quite nicely written compared to the textbook's flowery language.

Best Review Book! Will Definitely Help Your Score
By daydreamer
After looking at several different brands of review books for this past year when I took AP World History, I decided on this one. It was more concise than other review books (more big picture, some detail but not as much) and it was recommended by both my teacher and other students. I like it because it focused on the big ideas instead of tiny little details. This was so helpful because if you only know lots of small details, they may not even be on the test. If you understand the big picture that connects all those details, you'll do a lot better because it will help you on the essay section (which I was most scared about) and help you figure out detail-oriented multiple choice questions.

I bought the 2011 Edition of this book, and I'm sure the 2012 one is only better. The author has a sense of humor and explains in normal, everyday talk to simplify what the textbook says. The practice tests are very helpful because they're harder than the actual exam was, so if you can work through them you'll be really prepared for the exam.

I got a 5 on the AP world exam, and I know I would not have been able to do it without this book. I learned a lot in class, but this book helped pull it all together. I only wish I had bought it earlier because I think it would have been loads of help to prepare me for each unit test throughout the year (there are 5 units) as well as the actual exam.

If you're taking AP world, GET THIS BOOK! you won't be sorry!

The right prep book for the AP exam :)
By P. George
If you're in AP World History, or self-studying, this is the book to get for the AP exam.

This past year I took my first AP [sophomore] and was extremely nervous for the exam. My teacher had us highlight and annotate the Barrons book for world history, but I found it really unhelpful. I found Barron's full of unnecessary details that distracted me and made it really difficult for me to concentrate on the vital points that I needed to know. The practice questions at the end of each chapter were too easy of a review.

Scared of getting a 2, I went on amazon to see if any other review book for the test had gotten high ratings. That's when I found Princeton Review's book. Luckily my local library had this book available so I decided to get it quickly.

To be honest, I didn't really read the intro and strategies part in depth as my teacher had done a nice job in telling us how to write the three types of essays. Plus all of our tests this year were AP Multiple Choice style.

So i skipped to the review section which was a decent size. I found it to be organized in chapters; each pertaining to one chunky time period of world history. After reading and taking good notes on the first chapter, I knew this was the right book. I was able to concentrate and really understand the material, and the book gave me several examples of connections I should make. I managed to go through the entire review section in about a month, and the notes that I took served as good reinforcement material.

The author of this book has a style that is understandable, though there are a few corny jokes in between [this actually helps you remember the material!]

One downside to this book is that there are no practice review questions after each chapter of the review [a prime reason why I took notes...and I would suggest the same]

Come AP exam time, I wasn't completely confident [who is?] but I felt much better than before. So in that sense, this book was a success. The exam was decent as well, and although I haven't gotten my scores back yet, I think I passed with a 3 or above!

* I must note that the practice tests in this book were SO off. In fact, I don't think any review book has realistic practice tests so I would suggest purchasing offical Collegeboard tests which are available on their online store.

So after a lengthy review which I hope some of you actually read, I strongly suggest this book if you are preparing for the AP World History exam and need a review guide. I haven't gotten my score back like I said, but I will be glad to update this review with my grade when I do get it :) Just getting this book alone will not help you. But if you are motivated to do well and actually go through the review carefully [and like I strongly suggest, take notes] then you will be in good shape come May !

-----------------------------------------------------------------

Hey guys! I am back to edit this review as I promised. I got my score report from Collegeboard today and I was extremely pleased. Turns out I got a 5 on the World History exam!!! This goes to show that this is the right book to use. Good luck!

I look forward to using activity pages from The CBT Art Activity Book - the detail and content of each page is ideal for the kind of art journaling and creative expression activities I do with my clients. The use of cognitive behavioral therapy within the handouts is a bonus! -- Bonnie Thomas, LCSW Child and Family Counselor and author of 'How to Get Kids Offline, Outdoors, and Connected to Nature: 200+ Activities to Encourage Self Esteem, Mindfulness, and Wellbeing' A little treasure inspired by cognitive behavioural psychotherapy ideas and creative principles. Beautiful and easy to use worksheets, which will compliment a clinician's tool kit. Especially helpful for brief interventions with emphasis on emotional exploration. -- Themis Kyriakidou, MA ATh, MSc FPC, Art Psychotherapist I am neither a CBT therapist nor an artist - and yet it feels like this book was produced with me in mind. A synthesis of informative text and inspirational designs that leave me excited about new possibilities in my work with a whole range of people I'm working with - young people, adults and families. This book will appeal, and be extremely useful to counsellors and therapists from a broad spectrum of theoretical orientations, and is by no means limited to those who describe themselves as 'CBT therapists' or as being 'artistic.' Bravo Jennifer, this is a wonderful resource for enhancing and deepening the therapeutic encounter. -- Paul Stockwell, UKCP Registered Family and Systemic Psychotherapist and Clinical Supervisor What a brilliant resource for therapists working with young people! The worksheet designs are immediately engaging and aesthetically suited to young people. Each section starts with brief helpful and accessible information for the counsellor. I am sure that this is what young people want - an opportunity to have conversations with adults on their own terms, choosing a word, a question, a pattern to work into. An important addition for the counselling field. Adults will want to use it too! -- Dr Gail Simon, Principal Lecturer in Systemic Practice, University of Bedfordshire The author sums up the core principle of CBT therapy in a very readable, clear an concise way... Guest's lovely, intricately patterned backgrounds and frames are reminiscent of the current spate of adult colouring books and allow the sheets to appeal to different age groups... One of the things I love about this book is that the author's drawings invite the user to "have a go", "make their mark" and not worry whether they are "artistic" or not... I have certainly enjoyed using this book myself, as well as inviting clients to use it to help them explore their own thoughts, and would happily recommend it to other therapists. -- Trisha Packer, counsellor and supervisor BACP Children & Young People

Need a digital version.
By S. Yacco
Great worksheets for students to express themselves. Would be perfect if you could buy a digital version or in a 3 ring binder. It says "photocopiable" but the pages don't lay flat enough to make a nice copy.

Overpriced for Content
By A. Bauer
There are definitely some useful exercises in this book, but half of the book contains coloring sheets. Wish I had known that before ordering. I can get mandalas for free online. The other coloring sheets are nicely designed letters of the alphabet-one per page, but I'm not sure how I will use those. They don't seem very CBT-oriented, which is what I was seeking in purchasing this book.

The first half of the book is great. The second half was a waste of my money.

Misses the mark
By Alyce G Robinson
Good in theory but misses the mark. Not as innovative as claimed and over priced for the content. Annoying to photo copy also. Books like this are always better spiral bound.

Ferrari 333 SP (WSC Giants), by Terry O'Neil

This book details the origin and racing history of the Ferrari 333 SP. Uniquely, none of the 333 SP models were entered into races by Ferrari itself. The cars were built specifically for customer use; a purchase price of $900,000 included two spare engines and race technical support supplied by Ferrari engineers. A total of 40 cars were built; the first four by Ferrari, the remainder manufactured by Dallara & Michellotto using Ferrari engines. All of the cars were sold to, and race entries made by, privateer teams.

From 1994, the cars contested the IMSA World Sports Car Championship, the United States Road Racing Championship, and the American Le Mans Series, at circuits throughout North America. In 1997, the cars also featured in the Europe-based International Sports Racing Series, as well as the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Two years later, the Doran-Lista team installed a Judd V10 engine into its 333 SP, with the aim of increasing power and improving fuel efficiency.

In all, from the 126 races entered, 47 victories were claimed by the 333 SP.

Almost banal...
By Mike Fuller
Let me preface that I'm really hard to please. The book starts with a disappointingly thin section on how the car was conceived, and an even thinner section on the car's design and development/technical description, and the rest is a straight forward retelling of it's racing history. In my opinion there isn't much new here. Really this would be a 2 star review, but ending on a positive, I gave it 3 as it could be seen as a good primer to those unfamiliar with the depth and length of the Ferrari 333SP's career. That's probably enough for most.

By Rick
If you want a history of the liveries and race results of different teams that used the 333, you'll be happy. If you wanted a indepth look at the technology, evolution, and creation of this car, you will be let down. I will reread the book, but I will be looking at the few chassis/motor shots and wishing for more. The pictures of these are available, pity they weren't included with descriptions. I give it 2 1/2 stars.

One time, I was walking through the mall with my girlfriend. This girl at the make-up counter asked if she could give my girl a few "beauty tips". The girl behind the counter looked like she just went out partying with Courtney Love at an all night LA bender. I'm talking early 90's Courtney Love. Basically, you don't take make-up tips from someone who has lipstick smeared across her face.

So, in researching whether the author had the chops to write a book about organization, I went to his website. There on the page was an alert that the website had expired 27 days ago. Not a good example.
