Corrections officers test

Time is beginning to draw near for the exam. Are you prepared? Are you mentally prepared for the life of a correctional officer? If not. I highly recommend this EXam study guide, for the corrections officer test. It is well written and formatted. Making it easy for anyone studying for the exam to full comprehend and capture all concepts that will be in the exam.
I love how the first section of the of the book are strategies for all test takers.There are 12 in total. Each of the strategy is broke-down into few sentences for further explanations. Applying these strategies will definitely prove your test score. Regardless, of the topic.
The book covers these topics: The criminal justice system, standards, facility accreditation, male and female populations, deliberate indifference, the turner test, and much more. Every thing that you have covered in your classes is listed here.
Each topic is broke-down into sections. Each section is design to explain the information being presented with extreme ease. For everyone and anyone to fully comprehend the concept of the topics. Definitely covers everything that should be on the exam

Great information in the book, but the practice test is too easy

[I received this product for free in exchange for my honest review of the product. This has, in absolutely no way whatsoever, affected my review of the product, nor has it swayed my opinion of the product or its value.]

This book is not very large -- only 61 pages -- and is divided into four simple sections.

The first section is the "Quick Overview" section. This section is very brief. It just gives a quick overview of the exam and how to use this book to prepare for it.

The second section is a selection of 15 different test taking tips, along with a few test taking myths, such as the assumption that tests often have patterns in them that, if you can just find them, will help you answer the rest of the questions. This is, of course, erroneous, but some people need to read that in a book to actually believe it.

The third section is the most detailed section. It is the section that actually breaks down everything about the corrections officer exam. This section is DEFINITELY a five star section. If I had based my entire review off of this section, alone, this book would have very easily merited five stars. It is very detailed -- very in-depth. It covers everything you could possibly need to cover in order to prepare for the correctional officer's exam. Some of the topics covered (but not nearly all of them) are as follows: Corrections, the Criminal Justice System, Audits, Male and Female Inmate Population, Federal Prison System, Juvenile Justice, Communicating Policy, Work or Food Strikes, Natural Disasters, Civil Disasters, Hostage Plans, Escape Plans, Bomb Plans, Different Prison/Correctional Officer's Jobs and Positions Available, the Fourth and Fifth Amendments, Cross-Gender Examinations, etc. etc. etc. It is most definitely the largest part of the book, and I can't imagine how they could have left out anything important. Everything that I could think of that would need to be covered in this book, I FOUND in this book.

Finally, the last section is the practice exam. This exam was what made me bump my rating down to four stars. The information in this book is GREAT; truly, it is wonderful information to have if you are about to take this exam. The practice test, however, is a bit lacking. When I get a book like this, the first thing I do is flip to the practice test and see if I can answer any or most of the questions before reading the material. Then, after that, I review the material and then re-take the test to see if my scores had improved. With this study guide, however, I answered 99% of the questions correctly before ever cracking open the rest of the book. The questions were very basic ones. I was a little surprised actually because the information in the guide is wonderful and detailed and just all around great. But the practice test did not match the preparation materials.

Still, despite that, this book is still a great guide to have. The information provided is amazingly precise. I just recommend that people taking the exams not become overly confident if they take this guide's practice test and do extremely well. I just don't think that this practice test mirrors the actual exam in difficulty. So yes, buy the book, and use it to study for the exam. But once you take the practice test and do well, don't automatically assume you will do well on the exam or that the actual exam will be this simple.

My boyfriend has talked about going to corrections officer school for quite some time. I thought by getting him this he would get that extra push he needed to take a step into the future. He loved it, he enjoyed reading through the questions and reading the informative material, it made him want to begin so much more. The book was good but there was no attachment of the code to access online and for the mobile,. I've searched for it in every page including the inner portion of the cover, still, there was no sticker or attachment aside from the CD,. So I wasnt able to access anything about the mobile and online

DON'T BUNDLE WITH "Strategies, Practice, & Review"

This book is great. It's helping a lot so far. I'll test later this year. Preparing early. I accidentally purchased this with the "NCLEX-RN 2015-2016, Strategies, Practice, & Review" not realizing they were the same book. Only difference between them is that the PREMIER version has extra practice test material. Other than that... they're word for word the exact same. Wish i had noticed that before buying the other version of the book. Oops.

Content review is lacking; use this only as an adjunct.

I recently took the NCLEX-RN and passed in 75 questions. I used this book in addition to purchasing the online Hurst review. This book isn't that expensive, so it is worth giving it a try. However, if deciding between review courses (which are much more expensive), then I would pick the Hurst review over Kaplan. From what I can tell, Kaplan focuses mainly on question taking whereas Hurst focuses on content. After having taken the NCLEX, I can honestly say that your time is better spent focusing on content. If you don't know your content, then strategies aren't going to be very helpful unless it is a low level question - and these aren't going to help you pass! I would brush up on content using the Hurst review and then go through this book to finish off your prep work.

There is a disconnect between what students learn in universities and what each job profile expects them to do. Jobs these days require new hires to learn at a fast pace and cover the learning curve in really short times. I aim to bridge that gap with the help of a few fellow engineers who are doing really interesting work. I have compiled the engineering journeys of accomplished engineers who work in fields including big data, internet of things, computer security, LASERs, and entrepreneurship.

The journeys are compiled in an interview format. In my opinion, knowing what each person did at different stages in their career - as a student and as a professional, is very important. An interview format gives them the space and freedom to share their exact thoughts. What I've tried to do is broadly cover the following points for each interview:
1. What has been your engineering journey?
2. What kind of work are you doing?
3. How did you get into this field?
4. As a student, what should I be learning in order to work in this field?
5. What are the future job prospects in this field?

At the end of the book, there's a resources page that will help you jot down the key points applicable to each field.

Great tool to help expand your vocabulary

This Word Vocabulary Journal is a really good idea for expanding your vocabulary in a way that works best for you! The journal has a total of 149 pages. The first page has a list of vocabulary words while the rest of the journal has blank pages for you to make your own word of the day. On each page, you can feature a new word and there is a spot for you to write the definition, a place to use your word of the day in a sentence and at the bottom of each journal entry, there is a place to draw a picture or a sketch of what the word means to you. The table of contents is left blank as well, so you can go back and add your word of the day as you add them to the journal. Overall, this is a great way to improve your vocabulary or even to learn a foreign language. I really like the idea and concept of this journal and I would recommend it to anyone looking to expand their vocabulary! I was provided with a free copy of this book from a giveaway that I won!

About the Author
Conrad Fischer, M.D., Dr. Fischer is the Residency Program Director in Internal Medicine at Brookdale Hospital in New York City and is Associate Professor of Physiology, Pharmacology, and Medicine at Touro College of Medicine in New York City. 

He teaches USMLE Steps 1, 2, and 3, Internal Medicine Board Review and Attending Recertification, and USMLE Step 1 Physiology.

MTB 2nd edition + New Basic Science additions = 3rd edition

Just received the book and read the ID chapter.

So, the only difference, I can see, between this 3rd edition and the 2nd edition is the addition of Basic Science information, which is displayed in purple boxes under the topics where it is relevant. From scanning through the rest of the chapters, it seems like ID has the most amount of new basic science information, with other chapters having their fair share of new tid-bits added as well.

Now, how helpful and useful the basic science information is, I won't know until the questions are started, but for the most part, the information looks as high yield as possible without going overboard reviewing ALL your step 1 stuff.

Another thing to keep in mind is that the "new" Step 3 exam is only adding about of 3-5% of basic sciences, so I don't think it can really make or break your score, and since for most of us, a passing score is enough, I think the 2nd edition of this book plus a qbank would suffice as well.

Other than that, all the other information seems unchanged.

I will update this periodically as I keep using it in conjunction with a Qbank and see how useful the updated information is.

Surprised there is no basic science added to the Emergency Medicine/Toxicology section. I started a qbank today and from the questions I got from EM/Tox, I figured there should be information on the MOA of some of the toxicities, like for example in Acetaminophen toxicity, glutathione is needed to inactivate the toxic metabolite NAPQI, or how n-acetyl-cysteine acts as a glutathione substrate to help inactivate NAPQI... and same can be said about any of the other toxicities listed in the section which I thought were pretty commonly seen and tested. Maybe their not as important for the exam??? Not sure but thought i'd point it out.

Good book, minor update

If you have MTB 2nd edition, you don't need to buy this book. At first glance, the "new" content for the exam change is minimal. The only other change is the 9 pages worth of corrections from the previous edition. Also, the authors didn't even bother to update the examination structure in the introduction. According to the FSMB website, the examination structure has been changed and can be viewed here https://www.fsmb.org/Media/Default/PDF/USMLE/USMLEStep3_2014_BOI.pdf. While it may seem to be only a minor oversight, for a book that harps on being "the first to address the new exam," it failed miserably at its basic core. Even with the occasional basic science correlate in every section, I don't feel that this is enough to make me ready for the new exam questions. From what I understand and have seen in qbanks, the majority of the new material on the exam is mostly related to epidemiology and biostatics, neither of which I have seen touched upon yet in this book.

That being said, the book itself is and always has been a great asset for step 3 and I highly recommend it. I appreciate Dr. Fischer and his team for providing us with this invaluable targeted review. It may seem overly critical to dock 2 stars based upon my own higher expectations, but the way the new book and videos were marketed I couldn't not have them.

Unfortunately one of the few resources.

This is to shallow for the exam, now we find lots of new info the exam such as prevention, risk factors and outcome predictors, which this book doesn't cover. Step 2 CK and Step 3 are based on algorithms, at least for internal medicine which has no algorithms. The new basic sciences are comments that you must have known to get this far and take this exam. The new Patient Safety and Quality Improvement facts are as well too basic and shallow, there are no mention to root cause analysis, adverse events, sentinel events which are man themes in PSQI.

Amazingly there's no epidemiology or statistics section which is a big deal for this exam. We need better sources to take the restructured exams and unfortunately this book is one of the few resources we have, maybe was worth it years ago when exams were "easier" but no doesn't meet the expectations I had.

I don't want to sound disrespectful but the Internal Medicine section needs an urgent thorough review by board certified people, some parts seems to be written by mediocre med school students, with lay language and non-standard cut-offs values for decision making. We cannot just say "severe cases must be treated with this..." when no definition of severe cases are in the book, the questions will challenge you to decide whether this is severe enough or not, that's why I preferred to use this as a notebook to write on top of every disease what will help me to answer questions. I hope you find this comments useful and made you choose wisely about other resources and don't expect this book to be the panacea.
