About the Author

Robin Banerjee is a senior professional executive with over 35 years of experience in several large multinational corporations in more than 20 countries. He is a Chartered Accountant, Cost and Management Accountant, Company Secretary, and has a Master’s degree in commerce. 

During the initial years of his career, he served in Hindustan Unilever in several positions, including as the General Manager of its Exports and M&A divisions. He then moved to Germany and joined Arcelor-Mittal as its Managing Director and CFO of its German operations. After working in Germany for five years, Robin moved back to India and joined Thomas Cook as its Executive Director. He then moved to Essar Steel as the company’s CFO and member of its global board. After that he joined Suzlon India Ltd. as its Group CFO and member of its board for several of its international companies in Australia, China, Chile, Mexico, South Africa and the USA. Currently, he is the Managing Director of a large manufacturing company. 

Robin has won several awards and was nominated by Business Today as the Best CFO in India; as CFO-100 in 2010 and 2012 by the CFO-India magazine; the Corporate Leader in India by DNA; and many others.

Robin has written three books on indirect taxation, one of which, Modvat, has gone into 10 editions. He is an acclaimed speaker on business management and finance-related topics, and has presented papers in numerous national and international seminars. He frequently writes for various journals, magazines and web-sites.

The author of this book, Victor Miller, joined the Queen's Royal Regiment, at Guildford, upon the outbreak of the Second World War. He volunteered for the elite Glider Pilot Regiment upon its formation and passed, with above average marks, the RAF pilot training program.

From here, he was to take part in three of the most iconic airborne operations of the entire conflict. The invasion of Sicily, the Allies first attack in to Europe, where he was wounded and temporarily taken prisoner; Arnhem, where the 1st Airborne Division struck sixty-four miles behind enemy lines only to clash with two SS armored Panzer Divisions resulting in 80% losses in nine days; and the assault crossing of the Rhine, into Germany proper, with 'only' 30% losses.

This remarkable story, jotted down shortly after each operation when the events were still vivid in the author's mind, is an astonishing record of skill, bravery, comradeship and resourcefulness which represents a fitting tribute to many fallen friends and colleagues. The book was published initially in 1994, before the author's death. This posthumous edition comes with brand new supplementary content, drawn together by the author's sons and family.

About the Author
Victor Miller was born in the London Borough of Croydon on 6 July 1919. After finishing school at the age of fifteen, he worked as an estate agent before joining up in October 1939. He was demobbed in 1946, moved to New York in 1947 and worked in Import/Export until he returned in 1951. He retired in 1980 after working as an Export manager and, except for his time in the USA, lived in Croydon, Surrey, his entire life until his death. This new edition of his acclaimed book marks a collective effort on the part of his two sons Christopher and the late Peter J. Miller, as well as Peter's wife, Janis Moran, to get the book back into print in time for the 70 anniversary of the ending of the Second World War.

A great account of WW2 airborne operations as seen through the eyes of a glider pilot sergeant. I've read a lot of books and accounts of the plight of the 1st Airborne within the Oosterbeek perimeter, but Miller's account of 6 days of trench life within the vicinity of the Hartenstein Hotel is a must read for all enthusiasts of the gripping combat that was Oosterbeek in 1944.

After being accidentally rammed by the Coast Guard destroyer USS Paulding on December 17, 1927, the USS S-4 submarine sank to the ocean floor off Cape Cod with all forty crew aboard. Only six sailors in the forward torpedo room survived the initial accident, trapped in the compartment with the oxygen running out.
 
Author and naval historian Joseph A. Williams has delved into never-revealed archival sources to tell the compelling narrative of the S-4 disaster, the first attempt to rescue survivors stranded aboard a modern submarine. As navy deep sea divers struggled to save the imprisoned men, a winter storm raged at the surface, creating some of the worst diving conditions in American history. Circumstances were so terrible that one diver, Fred Michels, became trapped in the wreckage while trying to attach an air hose to the sunken sub—the rescuer now needed to be rescued. It was only through the bravery of a second diver, Thomas Eadie, that Michels was saved.
 
As detailed in Seventeen Fathoms Deep, lessons learned during this great tragedy moved the US Navy to improve submarine rescue technology, which resulted in later successful rescues of other downed submariners.

About the Author
Joseph A. Williams is a librarian, archivist, and historian holding master's degrees in American History and Library and Information Science from Queens College. He worked for several years as the Head of the collections and Assistant Director of the State University of New York Maritime College's Stephen B. Luce Library which specializes in nautical research. Currently, he is the Deputy Director of the Greenwich Library. Joseph has published in the fields of maritime history and librarianship including articles in scholarly journals, popular sea history magazines, trade publications, and chapters in anthologies. His work has also been presented at national and regional conferences and symposia. He has taught courses at the graduate and undergraduate level in American History and Librarianship. His first book, Four Years Before the Mast, is a history of Maritime College, the nation's oldest maritime training school. His second book, Seventeen Fathoms Deep, is a narrative history concerning the 1927 submarine S-4 disaster.

Seventeen Fathoms Deep by Joseph A Williams is not your typical submarine book. The authors' discovery of hundreds of documents surrounding the ramming and sinking of the submarine USS S-4, that have lain buried in an archive that was collected by John Baylis, the commanding Officer of the USCGC Paulding, that collided with the S-4. These documents have been unseen since the salvage operations and the inquests into the accident in the late 1920's. They give an up close and personal look at the events and feelings surrounding the attempts to rescue six trapped sailors in the S-4 torpedo room during horrible, freezing winter storms. The turmoil surrounding these efforts and the lives of the men involved in this lifesaving operation, officers, divers, sailors of the Navy and Coast Guard and the media. The newspaper war the Press and the Navy became involved in around the sinking and the dissemination of information that we take for granted now and how it changed the way the Navy handles events such as these. The feelings of the families concerning the sinking and the Herculean and heroic efforts to salvage the submarine. All this and more are wrapped up in a gripping story that keeps you engaged from the first page to the last. This reviewer read the entire book in a day that, though it was set down for various reasons, was picked back up shortly and concluded as he went to bed. A great read for anyone interested in American and or Navy history. A book that should be read by submariners to understand their own history.

A Must for Submariners and Navy History Buffs

I highly recommend this study of the Submarine S-4 rescue and salvage story. It is a dramatic tale long overdue in full manuscript form.
Four or five authors have attempted to research and bring the story to fruition but Joe is the first and deserves high praise
for a good, well-researched book. I am one of the four or five, so I am intimately familiar with the sources used by Joe. He selected
wisely from the volumes and volumes of material on S-boats and the S-4 in particular. For aspects of the story for which we have inconclusive
information, Joe offers explanation without revisionist history. He places you in the moment, for example when reporters first arrive in Provincetown, Massachusetts, rushing around in search of information, or later during rescue attempts to save the six men trapped alive in S-4's torpedo room. The aftermath, when it seemed the Navy's entire submarine program was on the line, is well-covered. Bravo Zulu, Joe Williams!

Excellent book and a superlative research effort. Williams approaches the history from an objective distance, so that we don't just see it from the Navy's point of view, or the press's. He doesn't engage in laying blame, but just presents the facts of who did what when, or said what. There is no sermonizing about the public's failure to grasp the danger and difficulty -- near impossibility -- of diving and attempting rescue in the winter storm conditions. Even the public's "helpful suggestions" to the professional Navy rescue and salvage team are presented without editorial comment.

Especially engaging are the stories of individual divers. We come away with a feeling of awe for men who would trust their lives to that kind of equipment and put their lives at extreme hazard to attempt a rescue under such horrendous conditions. All the underwater accidents and near deaths of these men -- who go back down the next day -- can only command profound respect.

The archival pictures, none of which are familiar historical photos that readers would recognize from other books, lend a further you-are-there feeling. And the concluding section, about submarine disasters in the following years and lessons learned from the S4 sinking, create a context for the significance of the S4.

The e-book review copy I read courtesy of NetGalley needed some careful editing, but I trust both the e-book and hard copies have now been polished.

Read this if you're interested in submarines, the Navy, historical disasters, heroic rescue attempts, or the history of the 1920s and the technology of the times. Highly recommended.

I got these to help quiz my cousin who is a teacher. She has worked in the field for so long, so it made it easy for me to help her study considering I know absolutely nothing about the subjects to be tested. This made it so much easier than trying to make flash cards or generic study guides. Someone knew what types of questions that would be asked and made this practice question list to help which I think is awesome. It makes me want to get these in other subjects simply to learn about them. I was never a test taker as a child, so these might be a good way to improve my test taking skills.

And dangerously beautiful. Hawker does a great job giving us insight ...

Petty has been held captive by her father for years and when he dies of a heart attack, she bounces between mourning and rejoicing. She is at a loss as to what to do. The stipulations in her father's will soon decide the matter for her. She runs, armed and dangerous, pursuing answers to her many questions about why her father controlled her every move and who her family really is. She is pursued by her father's only friend, a militia nut, and the police.

From that moment on, the chase is tense and heart rending. Not only must Petty remain free (and alive) but she must navigate a world she has only seen on reruns on TV. The real world is much more unpredictable and cruel. And dangerously beautiful.

Hawker does a great job giving us insight into Petty's struggle (internal and external) while keeping the pages turning as if blown by a fan motor. The twists and turns surprise and delight. Petty is both tender and terrifyingly tough. Dekker, her unwilling companion, seems to need to hold her and hold a gun on her. Despite all this, Petty charges ahead into an inevitable collision with her past.

But this is not only a well written chase story with high stakes. It is a parable about life fifteen years into our fear riddled century. Petty has been convinced that the only response to life is fear and to arm against it. So too are many of us who watch the news or listen to politicians. Fear locks us in every night. We are succored on a false view of life that keeps us worrying about lies and/or things that are opposite from what we've been told. Today's parents especially are warned that every stranger is danger, that many foods are poison, and that life outside the house is risky at best. In many ways we are Petty. And like her we need to find the truth no matter how dangerous.

Fast Paced Thrill Ride

I loved everything about this book. It's been a while since I found a book I truly couldn't put down, and this was just that. The Drowning Game is full of unexpected twists, authentic emotions, and characters who made me laugh, cry, and think. I can't wait to read more from this author.

This is one of the best books I’ve read in quite a while! This is a dark read that covers subject

matter that some may find offensive, but it is extremely well written and handled so well that I literally

could not put this book down! When I first started reading this I was honestly a little apprehensive about

reading this book since the entire situation seems a bit off from page one and only gets stranger from

there. Keep reading! I am so thankful that I stuck with this story and kept reading as this is honestly one

of the best stories I’ve read this entire year! Petty and her father have lived isolated from the rest of

society and live a survivalist lifestyle to the extreme. Petty has been trained by her father rather than

raised as most little girls are. She has been trained to be lethal and efficient and has learned never to

trust anyone under any circumstances. He has taught her that the world is a dangerous place and even

goes to the extreme of locking her in her bedroom each and every night under the guise of keeping her

safe. This is the only life Petty has ever known and she has absolutely no idea that her life is far from

normal. They live on the outskirts of a small town and are known as the town crazies. Everything goes

along fine for Petty until she discovers her father’s dead body in his bed one night and everything goes

off the rails from that point for her. The police have to be called in to collect her father’s body and the

one friend her father actually had shows up to help Petty take care of the funeral arrangements. He has

ulterior motives that are seedy and malicious and I hate him from the second he graces the pages of this

story. The things he does to Petty are horrible and I found myself truly wishing for bad things to happen

to this disgusting excuse for a man the entire book!

My heart broke over and over for Petty for everything she’s gone through and I love her

strength and determination to make it through whatever life throws at her. She is a truly inspiring

individual and I found myself wanting something good to finally happen for her. Dekker is a local

resident of the small town Petty lived in and he gets pulled into her strange and twisted world and taken

on this life changing adventure with her. Petty is going through so many journeys simultaneously and

manages to hold herself together stoically through it all.. She’s on a mission to find herself, to trace

herself back to her roots and to figure out where she fits in this crazy world and I enjoyed every second

of reading about it. This is an extremely intense read that grabbed a hold of me from page one and kept

me on the edge of my seat until the very last page! I highly recommend this book to anyone and am so

thankful that I got to read this. Books like this don’t come along every day.

About the Author
Gordon Olive, DFC, always a copious note taker, made a detailed record of his RAF career and wrote up his original manuscript after the war. He was also an aviation artist and painted numerous detailed aerial combat scenes that he had experienced during the Battle of Britain - scenes impossible to capture on film. Dennis Newton met Gordon in 1986 and helped edit his memoir. He is an aviation journalist and author of seven books, including A Few of the Few, Clash of Eagles and Severe Weather Flying.

Dennis Newton is an aviation journalist and author of six books including 'A Few of the Few', 'Clash of Eagles', 'Australian Air Aces' & 'First Impact'. An amazing story of selfless courage in the face of overwhelming odds. Sadly, only those who were alive at the time will truly appreciate the dedication to duty and fortitude of these heroes. But for them I would not be reviewing this story.

With the 100th anniversary of his birth on September 7, 2015 Dick Cole has long stood in the powerful spotlight of fame that has followed him since his B-25 was launched from a Navy carrier and flown toward Japan just four months after the attack on Pearl Harbor. In recognition the tremendous boost Doolittle’s Raid gave American morale, members of The Tokyo Doolittle Raiders were awarded the Congressional Gold Medal in May 2014.

Doolittle’s Raid was only the opening act of Cole’s flying career during the war. When that mission was complete and all of the 16 aircraft had crash-landed in China, many of the survivors were assigned to combat units in Europe. Cole remained in India after their rescue and was assigned to Ferrying Command, flying the Hump of the Himalayas for a year in the world’s worst weather, with inadequate aircraft, few aids to navigation, and inaccurate maps. More than 600 aircraft with their crews were lost during this monumental effort to keep China in the war, but Cole survived and rotated home in 1943. He was home just a few months when he was recruited for the First Air Commandos and he returned to India to participate in Project 9, the aerial invasion of Burma.

About the Author
Dennis R. Okerstrom is Professor of English at Park University, a certified flight instructor, and the author of four previous books including The Final Mission of Bottoms Up: A World War II Pilot’s Story and Project 9: The Birth of the Air Commandos in World War II (both with University of Missouri Press). He owns and flies a restored 1942 Army scout plane and is the recipient of numerous awards for scholarship and teaching. He lives in Independence, Missouri.

Dick Cole - A Reluctant Hero

I had the pleasure of attending the last five Doolittle Raider Reunions. They were incredibly uplifting events―made you proud to be an American―and Dick Cole was a big reason why. As spokesman for the surviving Raiders, he would voice the sentiment of his fellow Raiders that hero wasn’t in their vocabulary; they were just doing their jobs, and they did them well. Admiral William F. “Bull” Halsey, one of America’s great fighting admirals, called the Doolittle Tokyo Raid “one of the most courageous deeds in military history.”

Dennis Okerstrom’s book, Dick Cole’s War, shows that the Doolittle Raid was only the beginning of many dangerous missions flown by Cole during World War II. Most people only knew of his famous first combat mission, but he was placed in harm’s way many times after the Raid.

Cole flew more than 250 combat missions during World War II. Okerstom writes of his experiences as Jimmy Doolittle’s co-pilot in the historic Doolittle Raid; his experiences as a pilot “flying the Hump” over the Himalayas into Japanese-occupied China, delivering vital equipment and supplies to keep China in the war; and his experiences as a pilot for the 1st Air Commandos, towing gliders with troops, equipment and supplies into the jungles of Japanese-occupied Burma in the first air invasion in history.

Cole believed in what he was doing and performed his assigned tasks with courage, competence and humility. He is the embodiment of the ideals of “Duty, Honor, Country.”

Okerstrom learned of Cole when he was writing his book Project 9, Birth of the Air Commandos in World War II. He also learned that Cole’s story had never been told because Cole never wanted it told. He felt he was just doing his job and that many others were heroes, not him.

Okerstrom was persistent and the result is this book published on September 7, 2015, Cole’s 100th birthday. It was a long time coming, but is well worth the wait. It’s a good story about a good man, and well told.

Covers All The Bases Well

Dick Coles War is an excellent book that takes you "inside the cockpit" on some of history's most daring military actions. The Doolittle Raid
was only the beginning for Cole, and his Hump Flying and Air Commando Work in the CBI are well illustrated. I learned a lot about the B-25 and C-47 from this book, and a lot about the humility of a real American hero. I am lucky enough to have met him twice at air shows and can visualize his actions as depicted in the book. Mr. Okerstrom has truly done a great job, and his own experience as a pilot shows through in describing the action. This book also gives a great insight to fighting in the CBI, an area that too little has been written about. Highly recommended for info on the Raid, the CBI and the Air Commando's.

The Story of Humble, Heroic, and Proud American .

Richard Cole is one of the last two Doolittle Raiders still alive. He will soon be 101 years old. And, after all the decades of never allowing his experiences during WWII to be told, out of personal modesty, he has allowed Mr. Okerstrom to do so. And he has done so very well. I've read every book on the Dolittle mission and biography/autobiographies on Raiders that has been published. This book is one of, if not the finest of those numerous volumes. Cole, despite being such a well know member of the Doolittle Raiders and spokesman for the organization, has kept his experiences out of the spotlight through his modesty and desire to simply promote the accomplishments of the other Raiders and the many other servicemen he served with. Dennis Okerstrom finally persuaded Dick Cole to allow him to share this story of great patriotism and humanity this humble warrior has carried in his heart for a century. The story is not to be missed. Any person interested in the general history of WWII, the Doolittle Raid, the events of the CBI theater 1942-45, or of a man who is product of a great as well as trying time in human events simply cannot miss this collection of true events. You'll learn a lot of history that you did not know you were missing! And be entertained and touched as you do so. Those of you who are aviation minded, you'll learn how it feels to do loops and aerobatics in a C-47 cargo plane, among other interesting tidbits of events!
I have had the honor of being in the presence of many of the Doolittle Raider veterans, as well as many other veterans of our nation. I wish I had known this story before now. The release of this material is outstanding, in that it has been wonderfully presented and made available to generations who have, or will have in the future, benefited from the service, courage, and sacrifice of so many veterans like Richard Cole. This book may be or may not be your kind of thing...

First, let me clarify that my 3 star rating is a neutral rating. This is a very difficult book for me to review. I'll start with what I believe is the premise. This is a book about marriage, and about individual perspectives on the same situation. It's a book that brings to light that every person experiencing a situation, even if the situation seems mundane, brings with them their own prior knowledge, and their own view hinged upon all the information that they know that others may not. It is also a book about compromise and what that compromise is worth to a person.

The reasons I enjoyed this novel and would recommend it. The character development is astounding, after reading this novel I know these characters, inside and out. Honestly, this book is relying heavily on the fact that the characters are the driving factor for you to turn the page because there isn't much else there. So they are lively, vivid, characters. These characters do seem to propel the story along so that you feel lost in their world. The beginning and younger years were by far my favorite chapters of the book.
The reasons I didn't enjoy this novel. It is not a light read. It is a heavy, dense read, and often times over pretentious (a whole glimpse into a pseudo play-opera based on Antigone) that brought the whole flow of the book to a grinding halt. Simply because I found myself having to go back and re-read the zealously laden series of complex metaphors, but some readers live for that kind of thing, and if you're one of them, you will love this book. I personally found it a bit much and would have preferred Ms. Groff sacrifice the literature for a better tempo to the story, but that is just my opinion.

Overall, this is where it becomes very difficult to review. I see what this book had to offer. I see the intention and I see the reasons for the delivery. However, when I ask myself the question, "Did reading this book have an effect on me and if so what was it?" To be truthful, I honestly can't answer this question. I don't know that it had any effect on me. I contemplated some things that were factors in the book, but I don't know if that was because of the reading or from knowing that I had a review to write. I also think I would have a difficult time recommending this book to anyone unless I knew exactly what type of reader they were. All these reasons are why I've given the book a neutral rating. This may be the book you are looking for, I may have not connected appropriately with the events, so this may be a book you have to try for yourself.

Groff relies on Hollywood style plot twists that cast characters as either good or evil

If you want to read a book about privileged white people who attended ivy league schools and who have tons of time to drink and have porn quality sex, then dive right in. If you want a book about a real marriage between real people with real problems, then look elsewhere.

I found this book utterly pretentious. Lauren Groff wants us to know on every page--in every sentence, for God's sake--how very, very clever she is. Her writing stands in the way of the reader actually absorbing a story. For example, her characters are named Lancelot (Lotto) and Mathilde, and their dog is named God. So every time you read about them, in the phrase, for example, "God screamed", the narrative dream is broken and you are left wondering if you should make more of what you are reading than you are. Furthermore, there is nothing about the characters that inspires you to care about them. The choice to read to the end is compelled by the hope that something will happen that will make you finally care--make the laborious effort of reading through Lotto's pretentious plays worth it. Nothing ever does. Groff relies on Hollywood style plot twists that cast characters as either good or evil; doing things that are much more common in movies than in real life. There is nothing in these characters that a real person can relate to.

I read this because it was chosen for the Morning Edition book group. I'm sorry I did.

Painfully pretentious and pseudo-poetic

I should have known. Whenever a book is shortlisted for an award and garners almost-universal rave reviews, I end up hating it. I had to pick through the miasma, the sludge of pseudo-poetic language, to understand what the heck was going on. I read a lot, and I am an English major, but this novel did me in. The writing induced headaches and exasperation. Oh, where do I begin?
1. Use of [brackets], including some that are full, long paragraphs
2. Turgid prose
3. A "hero" named Lotto, which also happens to be the name of a state lottery). It's short for Lancelot. His mom was afraid kids would make fun of him if he was referred to as Lancelot. Hence the perfectly non-mockable Lotto.
4. One-word sentences
5. Repugnant characters
6. Absence of logic
