ANABASIS ( e-né-be-ziz ), a terminação VOG 1 + CONS 1 indica proparoxítonos como pyramid, analysis e animal.

About the Author

Mike Doyle is an internationally acclaimed LEGO artist and the author of Beautiful LEGO and Beautiful LEGO 2: Dark. His LEGO creations have been shown at the pop culture-inspired Gallery1988, Columbus Museum of Art, and the Morris Museum and are part of the inaugural collection of the Museum of Realist Art, Boston. He works as a graphic designer and gives lectures on the topic of "LEGO as Art."

LEGO ART BOOK

Please also check my daughter's video review of the book on Youtube. We liked this book although we wished there were more builds that can be built using "typical LEGO collection". The models in the book need very sophisticated LEGO parts and are very specific on color and need great deals of both experience and creativity. So this book is an arts book, nature art out of LEGO and not a tutorial for average builders to learn how to make natural scene models. You can still find some little models that can be imitated and some partial ideas to copy to your models. The book author is apparently one of the few top class LEGO gurus as he built plants, animals, ..etc with great detail and beauty. Paper quality is great.

One of the best LEGO-as-art books out there. Great for coffee table, adults, and oh yeah. Kids.

No Starch Press has become the go-to publisher for fans of LEGO who want something a little more than the mass market books that LEGO itself puts out. LEGO's official publications are understandably geared toward children, which is as it should be. No Starch Press has tapped into the market of adults who are either nostalgic enough to remember how much they loved LEGO, or who are rediscovering playing with LEGO themselves, or that rarest of adult--the ones who see LEGO as an artistic medium in its own right. This last group of people are highlighted in Mike Doyle's "Beautiful LEGO: Wild!"

This is Doyle's third "Beautiful LEGO" book, following the original and "Beautiful LEGO: Dark." All three have Doyle more as a curator of the best LEGO builds from around the world than an author. He includes a few of his own pieces in the mix, but most of these models are things that are clearly labors of love by other Adult Fans Of LEGO (AFOLs). These artists have found ways to use LEGO to make sculptures and mosaics of landscapes, birds, fish, insects, cartoon characters, and mythical creatures, all under the overarching theme of "Wild."

In the preface, Doyle writes that "Seeing how simple shapes combine to give the illusion of a bigger picture is exciting." The way the builders do that varies, and you can see the how the styles of different artists impact how they use these plastic bricks to create organic shapes.

Some favorite pieces:
Peacock, by Sean Kenney -- using only standard LEGO bricks, making a pixelated kind of animal; Kenney has touring zoo exhibits with dozens of his creations, many of which are life-sized.

Sachiko Akinaga's Sea Otter Mum & Pup. This gets more complex, moving beyond only rectangular bricks, adding different angles, rounded pieces, and LEGO facing different directions.

Mike Doyle's own piece, Appalachian Mountaintop Removal, is a good example of the scale of some of these projects; at around 10,000 pieces, it's enormous, but is also depicting an entire mountainside. The jumble of vegetation is all made with different LEGO building techniques--most of the conifers are actually LEGO flower stems, simply turned upside-down. Chris Maddison's Wilderness Cabin on the right is another good example of a very small-scale model, again using a completely different mode of tree-building.

Andrew Simonson's Ereg Durin is one of the many minifigure-scaled builds that demonstrate living with nature; understandably, many of these depict scenes from or inspired by the elves in "Lord of the Rings"--great examples of building organically and in harmony with nature. Out of ABS plastic that will last forever.

I'm including Andrei Pacurar's Steamworks Owl not just because it's beautiful, but also because it reminds me of "Clash of the Titans." There are sections of the book highlighting "Artificial Life," and this is one of the best examples of that.

Truthfully, every page of this volume is worth highlighting in a review. Which would be writing a book about the book which would be both Inception-y and copyright violation. I love that Doyle credits the builders in an appendix at the back of the book, he thanks those who participated in a competition to be included, and it feels more like a collaborative achievement than something that Doyle just cooked up on his own. There are similar books out there that obscure where some of the builds came from, I like that the artists get full credit here.

If you are, or have ever been, a fan of LEGO, "Beautiful LEGO: Wild!" is a gorgeous way to celebrate that fandom. The printing is high quality, the binding is softbound, but more durable than standard paperback/trade paperback format. It's a great addition to your coffee table oryour playroom. If you're a LEGO builder yourself, you'll find inspiration here. If you have a LEGO-loving loved one, and you're not sure what to buy them for Christmas because they already have Every Damn Thing, this is a great gift idea. In any case, this book is by the fans and for the fans. They get it right.

LEGO Wild! Incredibly colorful critter creations!

Beautiful LEGO WILD! bursts with color from start to finish in this 200 page collection of organic LEGO sculptures. Unlike Mike Doyle’s last book which featured dark LEGO creations, this book celebrates the brighter end of the spectrum where colorful critters jump, fly, spring and splash off every page.

Doyle is a masterful curator and continues to showcase the best LEGO creations in the world. More than 100 LEGO builders are featured in this softbound volume which covers a good portion of the plant and animal kingdom. The book opens with some natural landscapes, then quickly moves to trees, flowers, birds, frogs, fish, and dogs. If it has fur, fins, feet or a beak it’s probably in this book, including a LEGO cameo of the grumpy cat. While most creations are photo realistic and natural, Doyle packs in the smiles, too, with plenty of cartoonish bears, beavers, mice and monkeys. The overall tone of this book is amazingly upbeat.

Although this book is not an instruction book, there are dozens of small creatures that can be copied just by looking at the photos. Additionally, many models in this book are small by design, making them within reach of many builders. Of course it will help to have a giant LEGO collection in the entire rainbow of colors.

Similar to Doyle’s previous books, this book is heavy on photos and light on text. This isn’t a concern though, as this is an inspirational picture book designed to impress. And impress it does, one beady-eyed bug at a time.

I give this book five stars for the upbeat tempo and for delivering what the Rainbow Lorikeet implies on the cover—perfectly packed pages of prismatic perfection.

It was nearly undetectable by enemy radars due to its speed and low radar cross section and was better at flying through heavy turbulence due to its solid delta wing design. It had a highly accurate navigation and bombing system. It had a capsule ejection system for the safety of the aircrew and was capable of getting airborne in only half the time required by other bombers.
Told for the first time, this is the inside story that dispels the unproven myths surrounding the demise of the B-58 and why this magnificent airplane should have been saved. Its loss from the nuclear armory was a severe blow to our “Cold War” deterrence strength. The B-58 was a bomber that set the standard for fear in the heart of an enemy. Its loss was a strategic mistake.
The author provides lessons learned and recommendations for military and civilian leaders, going forward, to hopefully prevent future blunders—like what happened to the B-58.

About the Author
The author had a thirty-one year career in the US Air Force, including three years as a navigator/bombardier in the B-58. He worked in the Pentagon; was twice a Wing Commander; as well as a Director at the National War College. He has a Military Science degree and a Masters degree in Political Science and has written or co-authored numerous publications in the areas of Military Strategy, and National Defense.

GREAT BOOK FOR AIRCRAFT LOVERS

I highly recommend this book about the B-58. I flew this fantastic aircraft from 1965 to 1969. But, Col Holt tells the inside story of how politics and infighting among Air Force Generals destroyed this beautiful and highly efficient aircraft.
I was a DSO (systems operator) at Little Rock Air Force Base when the wing was suddenly deactivated. Those of us stationed there were shocked when we opened up the local newspaper in October, 1969 to find out all B-58s were to be removed from service. Less than 3 weeks later, we all started getting transfer orders. Most pilots went to Vietnam, navigators to B-52s and FB-111s, and DSOs to KC-135s. By January, 3 months later, all traces of our wing and 45 B-58s were gone! I had seen military bases closed before, but nothing at the speed this happened.
The sad thing was that none of us really knew why we were so suddenly removed. The most logical rumor was that Air Force was given a budget choice between keeping the B-58 and buying the newer FB-111s. Also, as time went on, we started believing the myths about maintenance problems, operating costs, accident rates, and design flaws. But, none of these were true! As an insider at the Pentagon, Col. Holt sets the record straight about how just a few Generals decided they would rather keep 4 older B-52 wings than retain the most sophisticated bomber in the Air Force. He also does a great job of dispelling all the myths that were made up about the B-58. All of us in the B-58 program were hand-picked from either B-47s or B-52s, and we knew there was no comparison with other aircraft. The B-58 was stronger, faster, and more accurate than any other bomber at the time.
Again, a great book for a aircraft/military historian, or lovers of great aircraft. I flew 3 models of the B-52, the B-58, KC-135s, RC-135s, and was a staff officer with the SR-71. The B-58 was definitely the highlight of my 21 years in the Air Force. Sad day in history when it was lost!!

My wife and I just finished George's book last night and wish it were twice as long. It is not only well documented, but written beautifully. I was at SAC headquarters at the time the decision was made to send the B-58s to the bone yard . I believe Al Dugard and I were the only people in the headquarters who had ever flown the B-58. I don't think either of us were aver consulted or asked for an opinion. It was such a major error. God help us to never make such a mistake again. READ THIS BOOK! IT MAY PISS YOU OFF BUT YOU'LL LOVE IT!

Here Today, Gone Tomorrow - Killing the Hustler

I've always thought the B-58 to be a futuristic Beast. From its first flight in 1956 to its last in 1969 , it always oozed sleekness, speed and sex. I was based a Davis-Monthan AFB when they started flying in to be stored at MASDC (AKA "the Boneyard" ) during late 1969. Eventually most of the remining Fleet of 86 or so was there , in two lines in the In-processing area of MASDC. At the time I accepted the statement that they were being retired to free up funds for the forthcoming B-1. Over the next few years, whenever I saw them in deep storage , I was struck by the fact that they weren't fully pickled , and that security around them was fairly lax. I wondered if someone at HQ/USAF had a more personal reason to get rid of the Hustlers ( the ghost of Curt LeMay's closing out the whole B-36 Fleet years earlier for no other reason than he wanted an all-jet fleet kept plucking at my thoughts). And now a retired Colonel who was part of the B-58 Crew Force and later at SAC and AF HQ has confirmed those lingering suspicions.
Chapter 5 of this short (127 page) text ) gives the answer why the 58 was grounded so quickly . It turns out that a couple of Generals at SAC HQ colluded with Congress and the then-SECDEF ( Robert Strange McNamara) to sacrifice the 58 in favor of retaining a couple of Wings of older B-52s and increasing the Minuteman ICBM Force. Using a variety of weak excuses, all documented and refuted in this book, the Hustler was shot down in mid-career by its own side. And for no good reason. The older B-52s in question were retired a few years later anyway and the Minuteman Force was capped at 1,000 missiles. The 58's did not linger long in retirement , but were cut up in the mid-late 70's. A few (8?) escaped the scrapper and remain in Museums ( NMUSAF, PASM, SACM, Travis AFM, Edwards AFB, and elsewhere),(some glorious, some derelict) to remind us of what might have been.

This self-published soft cover book is short, with a larger font, and often a fair amount of space between the lines to puff up the text. If it were done in the font and line size size of - say - Miller's slightly longer (152 page) book on the B-58, it would be closer to 40 pages. It is NOT an operational or technical history of the B-58 - rather it is more like a memoir, which is what I think the Author intended If you are looking for a much more detailed history of the B-58, Jay Miller's "Convair B-58 Hustler - the World's First Supersonic Bomber" (Aerofax,1985, Midland Publications, UK, 1997 ) remains the gold standard. But as a look behind the scenes of the political side of aircraft production and retention, it is most illuminating. Recommended for all B-58 Fans.

About the Author
Andrei Shepelev has been interested in aviation, especially in unconventional and lesser-known designs, since an early age, and as an aircraft modeller. He is a former student of the Kuibyshev Aviation Institution, specializing in spacecraft and rocket technology and has worked for a number of publishing organizations as an editor and designer. He is married with a son and two daughters and lives in Russia.

Huib Ottens first became interested in aviation when he read Biggles stories as a boy. He has a particular interest in the history of the Luftwaffe and has been researching the history of the Horten Brothers and their flying wing designs for some 20 years.

Amazing pictures and detailed information

I've been fascinated since I saw the first pictures of the Horten jet powered, wooden, flying wing from the Smithsonian collection. The stories I heard was that this was a deliberate attempt on the German's part to build a 'stealth' fighter way back at the end of the Second World War. But there has been very little published about the plane. Therefore I was delighted to find this book that covers this plane in great detail.

Clearly the plane was far ahead of its time, indeed, its design looks so much like the canceled A-12 from McDonnell Douglas/General Dynamics that it's uncanny.

In reading the book, the authors make it clear that the Horten brothers were thinking of aerodynamics and scarcity of materials rather than stealth when they designed the plane. The book points out that the wooden skin of the plane would basically have been invisible to radar, but the metal frame underneath the wood would still reflect radar waves. Designers simply didn't know enough about radar at the time.

The modern American flying wings such as the B-2 bomber are stable only because of sophisticated computer controls. The book reports similar problems with the Horten plane. This might well have prevented its use for its intended use as a fighter, but we'll never know.

The authors have collected an amazing amount of information and a large number of photographs that I don't believe have been published before.

Ordering mine today...

Great to see this volume back in distribution at reasonable price. Ordering my copy now. Another commenter noted Horten Brothers remain 'unknown', but there are sources for background about them out there. David Myhra did a 2-volume set (which I helped edit) on the Horten flying wings series (gliders and the Ho-IX). Basis for these books (published by Schiffer) was a large number of interviews with folks who built and test flew gliders and the V.1 version (glider) of the Ho-IX (Go-229). Myhra also spent several weeks with Reimar Horten on his ranch in Argentina, getting to know the man and learning about the intricacies of the "bell-shaped lift distribution" concept for a tailless flying wing design (to control yaw). The books are replete with photos of all the aircraft -- principally designed by Reimar as a 'series progression' of concepts to prove various theories -- including the construction of the Ho-IX powered prototype in an autobahn maintenance garage (to avoid Allied bombing attacks). Myhra's interview tapes (which formed book content) also were turned over to the National Air & Space Museum in DC and have been converted to both CDs and possibly transcribed paper copies (maybe in .Pdf format) for researchers' use. Excellent Book at this price

For the longest time this book was priced anywhere from $200 - $1,000 dollars. Fortunately they started reprinting this book and now mere mortals can afford to add it to their collection. I think just about anyone who has any knowledge of aviation history has to be completely amazed at the technology developed and in development by the Germans during WWII. Makes you wonder how it was possible to have all that engineering talent so concentrated and then a government which was not afraid of funding what would have seemed like far out ideas at the time. If you are a fan of Horten flying wing aircraft this is the book to own. With all of the photos and technical drawings an ambitious individual could recreate one with the amount of information provided here. Just wish video footage of the test flights were available.

Great study book. Well written in clear and comprehensible language. I actually enjoy reading and studying from the book. I have been using it to prepare for class and supplement my assignments. I actually like reading this book way better than the boring textbook. I feel more prepared for class and am doing better on quizzes and exam. I told several of my friends who also bought the book. We formed a small study group and go over the important points from the book. Great choice for AP history.

Makes it easy to focus on the important concepts

This AP US History review is very well organized. It exactly matches the format and curriculum of the US History AP course. I like that it is not superficial, but it gets to the point and makes it easy to focus on the important concepts. The different historical events are linked, which makes it easy to retain the information and understand the relationships. The language is clear and I actually enjoy reading it. Very useful book to use during the course and will serve me as a good study tool before the exam.

The book seems to follow the sequence as my teacher uses in class. Nice layout and easy to understand the major points from the book. I use the book as a preparation for class exams and to get a great grasp of the important topics for US History. Glad I got this book and use it each week. My sister had another book from a few yeas ago. I looked through hers and I like the layout and content of this book more. I feel that I get more out of class time since I have a stronger foundation from reading this book on my own.

Predator - The Secret Origins of the Drone Revolution - Highly Recommended Book

This a valuable and insightful narrative account of: the people, bureaucratic tensions, technologies and actions relative to the iterative designs and subsequent deployments of the Predator/Surveillance and Predator/Hell-fire aerial drone weapons platforms.

The book is masterful in describing the roles of innovators, bureaucrats, and war-fighters. The insights into the effects of technological innovations, decisions and policy in-decisions at the CIA, Department of Defense, Department of the Air Force and the Clinton/Bush White-house is valuable to readers interested in national strategy and US military issues.

The insights and understandings of political positioning and Washington power struggles are at once disconcerting and intrinsically valuable for students of defense politics. The writing style is excellent and his use of personal recollection and official records is masterful. This is a valuable and useful book for both specialists and general readers.

I highly recommend the Predator – The Secret Origins of the Drone Revolution.

A brilliant tale of innovation, with vivid profiles of key participants

When the American military wants a new weapon system, it follows an elaborate process. Sometimes the process succeeds brilliantly, producing world-class weapons such as the F-15 Eagle fighter and the M1 Abrams tank. Sometime the process fails, the most notorious recent example being the F-22 Raptor fighter which was spectacularly capable but too expensive to purchase in sufficient quantities. But what the system almost never produces is true innovation. It may sound odd to describe something stuffed with leading edge technology like the F-22 Raptor as not innovative. But a P-51 Mustang pilot in 1944, upon seeing an F-22, might be baffled and amazed by the features and performance of the F-22 yet would instantly understand it role and mission. The F-22 is essentially a vastly better P-51.

True innovation in military technology tends to come from outside the mainstream acquisition system, and there is no better example of that than what is variously called the Unmanned Air Vehicle (UAV), Remotely Piloted Aircraft (PRA) or simply drone. The American military has a long history with this class of aircraft, starting with “aerial torpedoes” (rudimentary ground-launched cruise missiles tested but not used during World War I) and target drones that were essentially large versions of the radio-controlled airplanes flown by hobbyists. In the 1960s, drones with cameras flew reconnaissance missions over China and Vietnam. But drones were always an oddity, the electronics technology was really not mature enough for the concept, and pilots who ran the US Air Force were never enamored with drones.

Following on the heels of his wonderful book about the V-22 Osprey tiltrotor (The Dream Machine), author Richard Whittle tells the story of the Predator, a slow and fragile-looking drone which has revolutionized air warfare. As recently as 2001, drones were on the margins of the American military, an interesting but marginal program. But the development and maturation of the Predator enabled it to be the right system at the right time after the United States went to war in 2001, and today the US Air Force trains more pilots for drones than fighter and bomber pilots.

Whittle’s book is mostly about people, including a brilliant but cantankerous Israeli inventor, two entrepreneurial brothers, a canny Pentagon staff officer, an Air Force helicopter pilot turned drone flyer, and several clever and resourceful engineers in both industry and the military. The profiles of these individuals are vivid. The narrative in the book is compelling, starting with concepts that led to the Predator and ending with combat over Afghanistan. Along the way, politics, lobbying, bureaucracy, technology and world events shape the Predator. Whittle weaves the tale in a compelling manner.

This book is neither a rigorous technical description of the Predator nor a complete operational history of it. Rather, it is a story about innovation and adaptation, about how the signature weapon system of the War on Terror came to be. It is a superb book, and I recommend it most enthusiastically.

THE introduction to Processing!

Once upon a time, far too many years ago to think about, I was a young nerd at school. I loved the sciences, but I also loved the arts and for a while that was fine. The trouble was once I hit that point where they start giving you careers talks I had to make a decision as to whether I was going to be an arts person or a sciences person. It was a strictly binary choice, no shades of grey allowed. I went the sciences route but I’ve always rather pined for the arts. Things are improving and now there’s a burgeoning community of tech-artists who blend the best that art and digital tools have to offer and one of the digital tools finding favour is Processing.

If Processing is new to you, it’s an open source programming language and environment developed for use by designers and artists. It’s used in both video arts and as a tool in producing interactive installations. The language itself is built on Java (though a much simplified version) and was used as a basis for the Arduino programming environment, so if you’ve used either of these you will find it familiar. Whether it’s completely new or not The Sparkfun Guide To Processing is well worth a look.

The book is project driven and split into 14 chapters each with its own project, which gives you something to show at the end of each one. (You can download the code samples in the book via https://www.nostarch.com/sparkfunprocessing but I think that you get a better learning experience if you type it in and debug your errors, yourself.) The chapters follow the same structure: an introduction to the topic; an overview of the Processing concepts to be used; a walk through the project code and finally some pointers on how to extend the project. So far, so traditional. Where the book really shines is in its explanations of the conceptual underpinnings of the Processing language. I’ve used Processing a bit before and have some more in depth books on the language but this one clearly explains some of the underlying principles that I had failed to wrap my head around; there were more than a few eureka moments. I’m firmly of the opinion that you can do much more with a sound grounding in the principles of a language than just by knowing the syntax so this book really worked for me.

Content-wise, you get a pretty thorough grounding in what you need to get started. The book starts with installation and drawing simple images before moving onto dynamic and interactive art. From there it moves onto slightly more complex areas such as working with text, processing images and manipulating video. Part of the utility of Processing is not just what it can do out of the box but also using the copious available libraries, working with external data sources and connecting it to other pieces of hardware. These are covered by projects using the Minim sound library, reading and using JSON format data and interfacing with Arduino.

Of course no book is perfect and there are a few minor quibbles with The Sparkfun Guide To Processing. Firstly, and perhaps most importantly, there’s a big strip across the back saying “Covers Processing 2”; Processing is now in version 3. In all fairness, the first full release of Processing 3 was after the book’s release, but it has been in beta for a while now. This shouldn’t be a problem as everything in the book seems to work with Processing 3; but it may put off some users who might think that they are buying an obsolete product. Secondly the coverage of object oriented programming is scant to the point of being non-existent. There is an excellent description of what classes and objects are but you never actually write either, which is missing a powerful part of the language. You don’t actually need to write in an object oriented way to get things done in Processing but it does make things easier when you work with larger and more complex programs. Finally, some of the final chapter on hooking processing up to an Arduino is specific to a Sparkfun product (perhaps not unreasonably as this is The Sparkfun Guide To Processing) but I would have preferred to see it address the vanilla Arduino board.

Quibbles aside, this is the best introduction to Processing I’ve seen. In fact I may go as far as to say it’s the best introduction to any programming language I’ve seen. It’s clear, concise and engagingly written. If you thinking about getting into digital art then this book definitely deserves a place on your bookshelf.

In summary, all I can say is arty nerdy types rejoice; someone’s got your back! Bravo for No Starch Press; bravo for Sparkfun and most of all bravo for Derek Runberg.

"The SparkFun guide to Processing" is a project-based book for the Processing language. Processing is a Java-based programming language that runs on Linux, Windows and Mac OSX with which one can manipulate images, draw graphics on computer screens, even communicate with Arduino microcontrollers. The book is organized like a technological cookbook where each chapter's recipe builds on the lessons learned from the previous one. Much of the material is culled from a class the author taught to middle schoolers and one could definitely see it being used even in an introductory college class or in a community "Maker" course. The book is a well-written collaboration between No Starch Press and SparkFun Electronics and its usage of graphics and code make it, quite frankly, a gorgeous technology book worth having.

Great Resource for Teachers and Hobbyists interested in STEAM and Maker Movement

Derek has created a great resource for the classroom teacher or "maker". I teach a digital art class to high schoolers. One of my goals is to encourage my art students to create interactive and kinetic artwork utilizing coding and robotics. This book is a GREAT resource for anyone who wants to explore these topics. It is written simply (good mix of technical descriptions and verbiage that is approachable to the complete beginner). This can be used as a text book that your students can work independently and develop their knowledge in their own way.
