Marianne J. Dyson recounts for us a time when women were making the first inroads into space flight control, a previously male-dominated profession. The story begins with the inspiration of the Apollo 11 landing on the Moon and follows the challenges of pursuing a science career as a woman in the 70s and 80s, when it was far from an easy path.
Dyson relates the first five space shuttle flights from the personal perspective of mission planning and operations in Houston at the Johnson Space Center, based almost exclusively on original sources such as journals and NASA weekly activity reports. The book’s historical details about astronaut and flight controller training exemplify both the humorous and serious aspects of space operations up through the Challenger disaster, including the almost unknown fire in Mission Control during STS-5 that nearly caused an emergency entry of the shuttle.
From an insider with a unique perspective and credentials to match, this a must-read for anyone interested in the workings of NASA during one of its busiest and defining times, and the challenges faced by women pursuing scientific careers.

the reader will enjoy snippets of the author’s personal life
By Cidney
This title will appeal to any who wish for a behind-the-scenes view of the Space Shuttle program in its early days. Even those of us with no connection to NASA probably have an image in our minds of a room full of support personnel sitting behind rows of computers, most famously those in Houston. We know these people on the ground help keep spacecraft in the air, but what exactly do they … do? This book provides nitty-gritty detail of some of those on-ground operations. Not only is the reader shown play-by-play actions taken by flight controllers and others during the missions, the reader is also shown what happens in the months (and years) prior to the missions as well as some debriefing after the missions.
As a non-scientist, there were times I felt a bit lost, but even at those points, the narrative held my attention. I am certain that the reading experience would be that much richer for someone with a background in aeronautics or related fields. The author provides an appendix devoted to NASA acronyms, and I put this appendix through its paces, eventually bookmarking it with a sticky note.
Interspersed with the mission prep, sims, and actual STS missions, the reader will enjoy snippets of the author’s personal life. These are fascinating in and of themselves, but even more so because of the way in which they shed light on women's experiences in the work environment of the late seventies and early eighties. Some of the incidents reported will feel distant from our current culture while others serve to remind the reader that the more things change, the more they don’t. The author goes to great lengths to present a balanced view of a NASA which was both driven to find, hire, and promote women while at the same time often hindered by individual, internal prejudices against women in the workplace. Many readers will breathe a sigh of relief when the author makes the decision to enter the private sector and experiences a more positive-toward-women work environment.
All in all, the book presents a fascinating, and often highly technical, look into the inner workings of sending the space shuttles into orbit, keeping them there, and returning them to Earth.

An Insiders Account of Early Shuttle Operations.
By Richard F.
Full disclosure...I worked with Marianne in the Shuttle Mission Control Center on STS-1, 2, and 3. I viewed her as a very disciplined and focused flight controller. I had no idea of the challenges she was facing, both professionally and in her private life. This book does an excellent job of telling both sides of her story. Her straightforward writing style brings the reader along from her memories of Apollo 11 to the current day. I have to admit that I'd forgotten many of the details that she chronicles. Her discipline in keeping journals, reports, articles and other source material allow her to not only describe events as they occurred but also to detail her associated thoughts and actions. My only reservation is that she provides SO much detail that it may be difficult for non-NASA insiders to follow the acronyms and various system operations/failures/constraints. I suspect that the acronym list provided in the appendix will be a great help to many readers.
I enjoyed this book as a reminder of the challenges we flight controllers faced, and overcame, to advance early Shuttle operations. Those looking for an insider's view of NASA human space flight ops in the early 1980s, including the evolving political climate and pressures facing us in that era, will find this to be a great read.

Success Is a Dream Made Real
By Tom Burkhalter
Marianne Dyson refers to herself as “Space Girl” at the beginning of her memoir. Appropriately, then, her memoir begins on a day special and inspiring to all of us, the first Moon landing. How, though, does a young woman with a dream to go into space translate that dream into reality? What does she experience along the way? What are the pitfalls of a university education if you aspire to being a scientist? What was it like to work at the very edge of what human technology can do? How does it feel, and what does one have to do, to solve complex problems that may mean life or death? (The question has not only a human context, but also that of a dream; for make no mistake, manned spaceflight is a dream only success makes real.) The answers Marianne came up with may not work for everyone, but the fact that they worked for her shows anyone with their eyes on a dream can find their own answers to let the dream become real. For future historians this memoir will be a mine of fascinating data on events, sequences, personalities and attitudes of those involved in the early NASA shuttle program. However, this work does more for us than that. One of the things distinguishing this memoir from so many others is Ms. Dyson’s ability to show her choices among the many pathways open to her at any given moment. Most memoirs will present the past as set in stone. This memoir is a window into the experience of another person as it was lived, with all the uncertainty that implies. It is the uncertainty of each moment of her life that Ms. Dyson shares with us, for no life is set in stone. It is that quality that makes this memoir come alive.
