"Cupid's War" an intimate glimpse of love within war

Every so often in life, we are fated to meet with a book which does more than entertain or even inform, which from the moment we open the cover takes us into a world where we live alongside the people and the animals, feeling the sun and cold, smelling the flowers, and sensing to the depths of my heart the triumphs and tragedies, as if they were happening to us alone. Martin Laurie's "Cupid's War" is such a book.
Mr Laurie makes no claim to being an historian, but in these pages he offers everything professional historians ought, and so often fail, to do: the texture and emotion of real life.
Knowing that Cupid was with her master, Vernon (Laurie's grandfather) or within his sight, and that Vernon's father also looked after her and the other horses tells me there were different stories to the ones we assume obtained during those sad days when the war, happily, ended, at least for the human participants. And knowing that her little foot later served to hold open doors back in England - that hoof which had opened doors for Vernon that he may never have dreamed existed - is all the more moving, as are the stories of the other horses, and the menagerie of other animals, including a dog and a goose. Though most of the animals conscripted to the human mayhem of war had no choice, some who followed despite the dangers and the privations, even to death, clearly chose to serve along with the soldiers who loved them. It takes beings like Cupid or the mascot dog Bosche to put a truly human face on war, and demonstrate that it takes more to break the spirit, or the love of human and animal, than bombs bursting in air.
