A great book for do it your selfers or those who want to try something easy and different.

Look in any garage and you are bound to find some 5 gallon buckets. We have 3 in ours and they are all used for various husband chores around the house like taking out the ash from the wood stove and fireplace and collecting wood chips.

This book takes a very basic item like a bucket and shows you how to create DIY projects like:

An upside down tomato planter
Multi colored storage for toys
Air Cannon
Toddler Swing
Even A Water Filtration System (good to know with the possibility of a zombie apocalypse.

The pages are broken down for each project with complete instructions including photos.
Each project also includes:
Tools
Duration
Difficulty
Affordability

I have so many favorites.

Great collection of fun, practical and innovative 5-gallon bucket projects

Amazingly creative! Who new you could make so many things with a simple 5 gallon bucket. The very first project- an air conditioner is brilliant! There are all sorts of other practical projects and some fun like drums and kids toys like swings and air-cannons. If you have pets there are a whole bunch of fun ways to feed and care for them with simple bucket projects. If there happen to be an emergency that left your plumbing down there are a bunch of super practical projects that could make life more comfortable. The book contains great materials and tools lists along with detailed instructions and photos.

These projects are practical and usable!

During a recent construction project, many of our contractors brought materials in 5-gallon buckets. I asked them what they do with the buckets once emptied and they replied that they toss them out. I hate waste and filling up landfills so I agreed to keep the buckets. But then, what do I do with them?

I was invited to read the "5-Gallon Bucket Book". The book is full of creative ideas. Each project comes with a list of required tools, materials, and instructions. It also includes step-by-step photos (extremely helpful to those of us who are DIY-challenged).

My problem with most DIY/upcycling books is that, while they do offer an alternative to tossing out perfectly usable materials, they are often projects which are cute but not practical. The projects in this book are practical, usable, and offer inexpensive solutions to common household situations. For example, a manual washing machine uses no electricity and is perfect for small loads or for camping trips. The small-room air conditioner not only cools a room with minimal energy use, it does so without the use of toxic chemicals. If you have pets, you might be interested in the gravity feeder. Gardeners will find the strawberry pot useful. And the beanbag toss offers fun for the whole family.

I like this book and recommend it to anyone who wants to build useful projects or, to anyone who has a 5-gallon bucket.

Based on additional research (over 100 sources), the title was changed to 'Corporate Nationalism is Dead'. Corporate allegiance to the U.S. is diminished and global influence has increased.

During the period, 2005 – 2015, internet usage went from one to three billion users reaching almost half of the world. By 2015, the U.S. represented less than 10%. This expansion was fueled by mobile (iPhone in 2007), social media (Facebook grew to 1.5 billion users, 83% overseas), video, and e-commerce, along with the growth of a global middle class. Major U.S. tech corporations opened business-critical research and development centers overseas, responding to markets and antiquated U.S. tax policies. Funding came from profits not returned (repatriated) to the U.S. In 2005, corporations had $.5 trillion in cash from profits overseas and $2.1 trillion by 2014. Microsoft and others testified to Congress in 2012 on tax policy; Apple testified in 2013. Nothing changed. In 2013, Apple had $100 billion overseas and $180 billion by 2015.

Other industries increased the use of technology (such as Internet of Things and Big Data) during this period to create advanced products for global competitiveness.

A parallel factor is that the median age is under 25 in developing countries. Many of these youth are using smartphones, developing apps, taking online classes, participating in hackathons, tweeting, and posting to Facebook. Examples come from Kenya, Nairobi, Pakistan, India, and China. Geopolitical usage emerged with the 2011 Arab Spring.

The global expansion is not over. Google, Facebook, and others are working on the space-based internet from high-altitude balloons, drones, and satellites. Google tested a balloon in New Zealand; Facebook tested a drone in the UK. Most of these new intended users are poor, but these corporations have altruistic ideas to change those conditions. Perhaps that is a characteristic of these new corporate states.

Global competition driven by innovation is intense. Jobs and education are critical; particularly in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math). Global demand for education will exceed the supply. China and India are the largest markets for online learning courses; the most popular are on computing from the U.S.

While this is happening, governments and technology corporations are butting heads on taxation, security, location of data, access to user data, and privacy. Technology is moving 10x the speed of major governments. Governments are burdened with debt and stymied by political ideological differences. Space-based internet and crypto currencies, like bitcoin, will present huge geopolitical challenges. Terrorism grew unabated during this period and major governments lack strategies. Will tech take a bigger role? Events and sci-fi predict such.

Of all the technology leaders, Mark Zuckerberg, the 31 year old founder and CEO of Facebook, is most visible – chatting almost daily with worldwide Facebook users on technology, education, health, poverty, and terrorism. Additionally, Mr. Zuckerberg met with at least seven national leaders in the 2014-2015 timeframe; twice with Prime Minister Modi of India. Meetings focused on connectivity, health, jobs, education, and e-commerce to improve the quality of life. Facebook’s goal is to raise 400 million people out of poverty. What will Mr. Zuckerberg do in the next decade? Or, Sergey Brin, the cofounder of Google, who has similar goals of changing the world.

Historically, there is a natural tendency to rely on national governments. Given these technology trends, is this still valid? Will the elections even matter?

Its a must read for all range of readers interested in technology, policy making, business and economics, social factors and implications. With over 25 books and e-books written about Mercedes-Benz cars, Bernd S. Koehling has proven to be an authority on the brand. Those books cover cars from the 1947 170V to the 2012 SL R231.

Bernd has been involved in the Mercedes scene since the early 1970s, when he restored his first 170 Cabrio B. Since then he has not only owned many classic Mercedes including a 220S, 300d Adenauer, 200D, 250SE, 280SE coupe 3.5, 300SEL, 350SL, 280E, 450SE, SLK230, he has also gained a wealth of knowledge and experience, which he shares with his readers in his books. Bernd has always considered Mercedes one of his favorite car manufacturers and has driven almost all Mercedes models built since the 1950s. His other weakness revolves around British cars, here especially Jaguar and Alvis.

A nice book about a great car

Owning an SL is fun, and if you have one or intend to buy one, this book is a nice asset. I wish it had a reference to where we could pick up a great deal on a supercharger, but even without that, it has some great tips. Places to look for rust are identified, and some danger flags are outlined---get one that has been taken care of. Looking at the book helped me identify the 1998 as the best year for me, and that by itself made the book worth it. Good info for owners and enthusiasts.

About the Author

Wayne E. Lee is Professor of History at the University of North Carolina and Chair of the Curriculum in Peace, War, and Defense. He is the author of Barbarians and Brothers: Anglo-American Warfare, 1500-1865 (OUP, 2011) and Crowds and Soldiers in Revolutionary North Carolina: The Culture of Violence in Riot and War (2001).

A must have for readers interested in warfare

Waging War is the best overview available of warfare over the span of human history. Chapters scrutinize how particular innovations have shaped the conduct of war, how they changed over time, as well the constraints in applying them. While many such innovations have been technological, the book examines other types as well, such as organizational and administrative. The author also considers the role culture has played in how different societies have approached warfare, and how they have reacted to change. His command of current scholarship is rich and thorough, and no other single volume better captures the variety with which humans have warred against one another.

About the Author
Dr. Ashar completed his undergraduate degree in Biomedical Engineering at Northwestern University. He then obtained his medical degree from the University of Maryland, School of Medicine. Following Residency and Chief Residency at Case Western Reserve University/University Hospitals of Cleveland, he joined the faculty at Johns Hopkins as an Assistant Professor of Medicine. At Johns Hopkins, Dr. Ashar has been very active in medical education. He currently serves as the Director of the Advanced Medicine Clerkship (Medicine Subinternship), as a core faculty member of the Medical School's Colleges system, and as a firm faculty member for the Johns Hopkins Osler Medicine residency program. He is on the Johns Hopkins Medical Student Admissions Committee and Continuing Medical Education Committee. He directs the Johns Hopkins Internal Medicine Board Review Course and is a founding editor of the Johns Hopkins Board Review Book. Dr. Ashar's clinical and research interests revolve around complementary and alternative medicine, preventive medicine, anemia, and medical education. Professionally, he is a fellow of the American College of Physicians and a Past-President of the Mid-Atlantic Society of General Internal Medicine.

Dr. Miller graduated summa cum laude with a B.S. in Biology from The Ohio State University. She earned her medical degree from the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and took her internship and residency on the Osler Medical Service at Johns Hopkins. After serving as an Assistant Chief of Service (chief resident), she joined the faculty and is now an Associate Professor of Medicine in the Division of General Internal Medicine. At Johns Hopkins, Dr. Miller has been very active in medical education. She currently serves as an Assistant Dean for Student Affairs. She directs the Johns Hopkins Internal Medicine Board Review Course and is a founding editor of the Johns Hopkins Board Review Book. Recently, she completed her M.B.A. at Johns Hopkins and serves as Vice-Chair for Clinical Operations for the Department of Medicine. In this capacity, she works to improve the delivery of care for patients at the institution. Dr. Miller’s clinical and research interests revolve around women’s health, medical education, and quality improvement. She is a fellow of the American College of Physicians and recent past Treasurer for the Society of General Internal Medicine.

Good overall, with caveats:

Good review overall. However there are too many typos that are distracting when one is trying to go through a lot of info within a short period. Also, too many errors in listed answers on the expert consult questions. I'd give 3.5 stars but hate to detract from the vast good work put into this course.

tables not easy to view

Kindle version has some formatting issues, such as bullet points which don't line up well (hard to tell what points go under which heading), tables not easy to view. Also, there are a few minor errors and discrepancies between information in MKSAP and this book. All in all, I thought it was useful, but probably better to get the print version.

a readable, very serious study of naval warfare in the wider European world from the age of Justinian to the Renaissance...Stanton effectively weaves together rather technical discussions of warship design, seafaring and the sailor’s life, naval strategy and tactics, complex diplomacy, comments on people, commerce, cultures, all of which makes for a lot of history, not just maritime history. Dr Charles D. Stanton is a former US naval officer and airline pilot who, after retirement, studied medieval Mediterranean history at Cambridge under David Abulafia. His particular focus is the Norman conquest of southern Italy and Sicily on which he has published several well-received articles in scholarly journals. His recent book, Norman Naval Operations in the Mediterranean, has also been highly praised.

A rather superb overview and starting point

These (as mentioned in this review's title) were the book’s objectives and I was rather happy to discover that they have been fully achieved. Given that this is an overview, and because of the book’s scope – roughly ten centuries – the reader might find in some cases that the author has somewhat and sometimes “cut corners”. Those that have already read more specialised books or one or the other of the periods covered will nevertheless find that there is a fair amount of detail included (much more than I initially expected, anyway!) and that all of the main points are well-made, starting with the limitations of naval warfare under oars and sail at the time. Also included are some good summaries of at least some of the main debates that have taken place among historians and a rather fascinating collection of illustrations, including some superb pictures of Scandinavian warships

A second - and related – major feature of this book is that it is a compilation and a summary. As such, it does not contain any original findings. However, it draws on just about all of the main specialists for each of the various periods covered and contains ample notes and a bibliography which will allow anyone wanting to go any further to do so. Note, however, that the bibliography seems to have been deliberately kept short, possibly to avoid burdening the general reader. A number of titles are omitted from it, both because they are quoted and referenced in more recent titles that are included in the bibliography and because they are listed and referenced among the notes (with total some fifty five pages).

A third feature of this book is its rather interesting and easy to read structure. A short introduction of some nine pages summarises the main components and limitations of medieval naval warfare. This is followed by ten chapters separated into two sections. Each chapter summarises the struggle under review and ends with a focus on a specific and particularly noteworthy naval battle or siege in which naval forces played a prominent role – a case study of sorts. The first section (six chapters) deals with naval warfare in the Mediterranean and the Black Sea. The second section (the remaining four chapters) is about naval warfare across the North Sea, the Baltic and the English Channel.

All of the main conflicts and periods that I was expecting to find were included, such as the Byzantine-Muslim struggle, the key and vital role played by the “naval connection” during the Crusades, “The Viking Onslaught” or the “Norman Invasion” (1066 and all that), and the Hundred Years War. AIso included are less well known but nevertheless important episodes, such as the Norman expansion in the central Mediterranean (the author’s speciality), the wars of the Angevines versus the Aragonese over the control of Sicily, the deadly rivalries between Pisa and Genoa and then Genoa and Venice and a very interesting chapter on the German Hanse. A final advantage of these ten chapters is that they can be read separately.

Excellent introduction to a fascinating topic

This is an excellent book, if you are interested in the subject matter. Stanton describes, with pictures, the evolution of maritime technology. As for warfare, he divides the subject into the Mediterranean theater dominated by Genoa, Venice, and the Ottomans, on the one hand, and Northern Europe on the other, concentrating on Vikings, the Hanse, and the French/English battles. At the end of each general description, he provides a detailed consideration of some significant battle, significant in the sense of the development of naval warfare as well as historically so. The writing is clear, well edited, and the illustrations profuse and appropriate. I read most of this book on my Kindle, but examined the illustrations on my Kindle for iPad, which presented them in color, and capable of being zoomed in on. Aside from matters directly related to warfare, Stanton provides enough social and economic context to make the significance of the military matters clear. I am not an expert in this field, but my impression is that this book would be enjoyed by both the general reader, and the more knowledgeable.

'Maritime historian Stanton ("Norman Naval Operations in the Mediterranean", etc.) has produced a readable, very serious study of naval warfare in the wider European world from the age of Justinian to the Renaissance. The book has two parts, a long one on the Mediterranean and a shorter one on the North and Baltic Seas, and their adjacent waters. He covers an impressive range of actors, Byzantine, “Barbarians,” Muslims of various backgrounds, Norman, Aragonese, English, Angevin, Crusader, Viking, the Hanse, French, and the several Italian states. Stanton effectively weaves together rather technical discussions of warship design, seafaring and the sailor’s life, naval strategy and tactics, complex diplomacy, comments on people, commerce, cultures, all of which makes for a lot of history, not just maritime history. An excellent feature is that for some particularly important operations, Stanton follows his summary overview in his main text with deeper analysis in chapter annexes titled “Exemplary Engagement.” Many of the events he covers, such as Byzantine-Muslim or Aragonese-Angevin wars are likely to be unfamiliar with English-speaking readers, which makes this a particularly valuable book.'

Improvements could be made

Despite the book being titled as for beginners, I did hope it was going to go into a more detail about some of the facts. A lot of the advantages and disadvantages to the methods were rather basic and could be found via a few google searches. Saying this, if you wanted all the information pre found for you and collated in one area then this book would be worth grabbing whilst on a free download promotion.

About the Author
George E. Reed is dean of the School of Public Affairs at the University of Colorado, Colorado Springs. Toxic Leaders Tolerated by Army Leadership

This is an outstanding book with current examples of toxic leader problems faced by the Army. Without naming the names, I recognize the examples from recent publications which give credence to those cited by the author. Sadly, this book will make no difference on the problem of toxic leaders. Numbers cited in past professional journal articles (ARMY magazine, 1988) demonstrate that the problem is not getting better over the years. Unless the Army's leadership does more that give it "lip service" (Army Times: "Army Chief of Staff Odierno Says No More Toxic Leaders"), this issue will continue to hurt innovation and bleed talent as good subordinates leave the organization. Reed's recommendations are sound and based on excellent studies. This book should be mandatory reading for all senior leaders. Our Army staff college students should be required to read it for their leadership classes. Most importantly, the Army's leadership should put some "teeth" into programs like command climate surveys that habitually identify toxic leaders ---- to no effect. Toxic leaders are known but rarely "called out". Reed's recent example of the Apache battalion commander at Fort Carson is a case-in-point. By rewarding identified toxic leaders, we perpetuate the problem. Many thanks to COL Reed for bringing continuing attention to this issue with hopes someone in authority will finally take action. I'm not holding my breath though.

Timely and well balanced, TARNISHED provides a scholarly yet accessible perspective on destructive leadership practices in the U.S. Military. The transition from sustained combat to shaping operations is taking its toll on morale and negatively affecting the retention of quality leaders. TARNISHED creates an invaluable opportunity to ease our Military’s talent attrition by creating a vocabulary and dialog about toxic influence-behaviors within our organizations. Worthy of serious consideration for the CNO’s reading list.

Essential Reading for all Leaders!

George Reed, the leading authority on toxic and destructive behavior in leadership, delivers a fantastic description of the problem, offers sound solutions and describes the hard truths associated with serving in toxic environments. His insights will resonate with both leaders and the led. He introduces potential solutions for those serving under toxic leaders at the tactical unit level and also policy recommendations for our strategic leadership in the services and DoD. His use of examples is helpful and his citations from experts like GEN Dempsey, LTG(R) Ulmer, Don Snider and Martin Cook add the professional credentials necessary to resonate with the military audience while his use of leadership pioneers from academia and business add credance for that culture. His assertions that we must change the culture and should focus on development of leaders early in their careers is right on. This should be required reading for anyone wanting to lead others.

About the Author

EZRA LEVANT is a lawyer, journalist, and political activist, and the host of The Source on SUN TV. He is the author of several books, including Shakedown, which won the Writers' Trust and Samara's Best Canadian Political Book of the Last 25 Years poll, and Ethical Oil, winner of the National Business Book Award.

An important book that exposes the myths and issues with clear thinking, logic, reason and evidence.

A well-argued thesis that clears up a lot of misinformation about fracking and its benefits to the economy and the environment. While environmentalists make claims, the author here provides proof. Of particular note is the scene by scene debunking of the HBO movie, "Gasland" that created the hysteria that made the technique controversial. If you ever want to win an argument with someone over fracking, no stone is unturned here. The writing style is very entertaining while articulating the issues in dispute over fracking. Law makers and policy advisors nationwide need to read this before reacting knee-jerk fashion to the environmental movement which the book establishes is funded by middle-eastern oil interests who do not want the United States to be energy independent. The issues in the book likewise clarify much of the motivation behind Russian invasions. Russia provides most of Europe's natural gas and fracking promises to make much of Europe energy independent too. The book is loaded with viewpoints on issues you never thought deeply about, but should be exposed to even if you disagree. A real eye-opener on many issues.

Big bag of Meh for this book

This book is more of a screed than an informative book. I am from Texas, conservative, I have a college degree with a minor in Petroleum Engineering, and I support Fracking all the way. However this book veers into the bar ditch to attack Arabs, the Left, and everyone else (except Isreal - who has nothing to do with fracking but is mentioned in the book nonetheless) even when it has nothing to do with fracking. I really wanted a scholarly book that intelligently discusses the topics surrounding fracking, and so far I am still looking...

Groundswell - Not Just the Case for Fracking but the Real Dirt on the Opposition to It!

Lavant hits the nail on the head. There is way more to the anti fracking movement than a concern for the environment. That's just the wool being pulled over the eyes of the well meaning but uninformed. Using a seemingly noble cause covers up the real agenda - maintaining a balance of political power. Living in a region with shale, I have witnessed this repeatedly. Lavant explains how this same scenario plays out in a dozen different countries. This book is a must for anyone who is not sure what the truth is when it comes to fracking. You won't hear this side of the story from the mainstream media, so read the book!
