This is one of those books that helps if you are trying to see the context of the words in Spanish. It assumes some foreknowledge, since you have to know most of the other words in the sentences too, so especially for people who are at an intermediate level, this is a good book. It would be helpful to mention that in the title or subtitle, or at least in the book description. I love that it’s in alphabetical order. With hyperlinks, it would have even been better.

So it's a good guide all in all

Didn’t know you can break down Spanish into this simple words and be able to understand it fast. I’ll definitely buy more from Justin Rodriguez. It’s good that he has found a way to lessen the hassle in studying Spanish. Also, from what I can remember, Spanish belongs to the top 5 of widely spoken languages, if I’m not mistaken. So it's a good guide all in all.

Great value and excellent way to learn Spanish!

I wish I had this book before heading to my most recent trip to Spain. Justin does a wonderful job not only giving the top 1000 most common words in Spanish, but also laying out how to use them properly. I studied Spanish for 6 years and learned some new things just by reading this book.

This book is great for a new beginner who wants to learn Spanish but doesn't know where to begin or someone like myself who needs to sharpen my skills and learn the context of Spanish words better. Either way, this is quite a value for so little money!

1) 60% do dicionário de inglês contêm palavras de fácil tradução, pois a escrita é bem parecida ou idêntica à do nosso vocabulário em português, têm origens greco-latinas e francesas, incluindo as orientais. São elas: BIOLOGY, THERAPY, IMITATE, PREDATOR, EXTEMPORANEITY, KARATE, IDENTIFY, SOBRIETY, ALCOHOL, CONTINUITY, DECAHEDRAL, GARAGE, CACHÉ, ATHEISM e MYOPIA. Imagine-se recorrendo ao dicionário de inglês 600 mil vezes para, em vão, tentar memorizar, os sons de 600 mil palavras já sabendo que não conseguirá se lembrar das pronúncias delas no futuro assim como não conseguirá se lembrar de 600.000 números de telefones nunca. 1 a 0 para as REGRAS.

2) A leitura de um texto em inglês requer muita habilidade da fala e muito conhecimento da fonologia inglesa. Mas sempre surgem no texto vocábulos que nunca vimos e jamais ouvimos, o que complica bastante na hora de pronunciá-los. Nos Estados Unidos, por exemplo, locutores noticiaristas toda hora precisam ir ao dicionário a fim de escrever em um papel os sons das palavras difíceis do texto jornalístico. E se em 1 dia de trabalho houver 100 palavras difíceis, quanto tempo um radialista de lá perde no dicionário visando não cometer erro de pronúncia quando vai transmitir o boletim informativo para não ser demitido? 2 a 0 para as REGRAS.

3) Visão ampla do idioma inglês a partir de um moderno dicionário de fonologia, que traz em ordem alfabética os sons das LETRAS EM DESTAQUE, EM GRUPOS E EM AMBIENTES ORTOGRÁFICO-FONÊMICOS, os chamados SISTEMAS FONEMÁTICOS. Logicamente, aquele que dominar todos os sons ingleses através das regras de fonologia vai levar muito mais vantagem nos estudos, se for aluno, e se for professor de inglês, o aproveitamento das aulas bem como o custo-benefício será ainda maior. Além disso a comunicação pela voz será muito mais frequente pela internet do que através do teclado. Qual computador irá obedecer o comando de voz, em inglês, se a pronúncia de determinada palavra estiver errada? 3 a 0 para as REGRAS.

4) 1.000 Regras de Pronúncia do Inglês são fáceis de memorizar porque correspondem a 1.000 arquivos na memória, onde podemos colocar tanto os sons de cada regra como de suas exceções. Pois exceções e variações não passam de extensões de regra. Fazendo uma associação, abra o arquivo do Rio de Janeiro, consta no conjunto RJ ( Olimpíadas, Maracanã, Flamengo, Copacabana, Samba, Rocinha.... ) Assim são os conjuntos das Regras. E como a gente vê as regras de instante em instante nos textos em inglês não dá jamais para esquecer que na pasta da letra A contém os seguintes dados: No alfabeto soa ei,como em VITAMIN A, no prefixo inglês soa a de coisa, como em ABOUT, AROUND, AWAY, APIECE. Abrindo o arquivo de X vou me lembrar de seu som no alfabeto que é éks de anexo, como em X-RAY. No começo soa z de zebra, como em XANADU, XEROX, XENOPHOBIA. E da segunda letra em diante na palavra X soa ks de fixo, como em MEXICAN, BOX, EXERCISE. Nunca esqueceremos de que no sistema AEIOU + CONS 1 + E/I + VOG a vogal I soa i de mil, como em VIDEO, LINEAR, TRADITION, MATHEMATICIAN. O arquivo de WA diz que esse Grupo soa uó, como em SWAMP, WAS, WATER e SWAT. Em 2 anos se é possível chegar perto dos sons de 1 milhão de palavras em inglês, incluindo afixos, como já foi comprovado nas 2 mil horas/aula no curso de extensão e especialização em pronúncia do inglês ministrado pelo linguista e Prof. Fábio Alencar de Recife desde 2008. 4 a 0 para as regras

Nice photos but not what I was expecting

3 stars because the cards have nice attractive clear photos BUT there is only one card for each word family so it's not a matching or sorting game at all. They can be used for review but aren't very useful for actually teaching word families.

A Fun Look at How Things Are Really Invented

I am an Engineer, and have always had an interest in the history of technology and invention. I never cease to be amazed how things are invented by the “wrong” people; how someone trying to solve one problem inadvertently solves a completely unrelated “problem”; or how problems that no one knew existed are “solved”. Gavin Weightman examines a few famous inventions and how they came about.

=== The Good Stuff ===

* The author would make the case that, while there is no such thing as a typical path to invention, there is a common thread among many of the world’s greatest breakthroughs. The initial discovery, the “aha moment” often comes from a total amateur, or someone not skilled in the things he is inventing. Later, after the pioneer has proven that something is possible, persons more skilled in the particular technology take over and refine and perfect the technology. For example, Marconi, who “invented” transatlantic radio transmission, never could articulate how it worked. It is not obvious that he cared.

* The book examines a number of “earth-changing” inventions such as television, powered flight and the cellular phone. In each case, the original article built upon many previous discoveries and inventions, and persons or companies other than the original inventor later developed a consumer technology. As an example, while Philo Farnsworth likely invented the modern television, it was David Sarnoff and a few hundred people at RCA that made it into a consumer friendly technology.

* The author does a nice job of explaining the genius of the inventions discussed, but without turning the book into a technical journal. The scientific and technical terms used should be understandable by anyone with a high-school education. Weightman writes in an easy-to-read style, and keeps the narrative informal and easy-to-read. He also does an excellent job of tying together various parts of the story, and helping the reader sort through the many conflicting claims for each invention.

=== The Not-So-Good Stuff ===

* The only complaint I have is that Weightman creates some arbitrary boundaries around inventions in order to support his theory. For example, in discussing the invention of a cell phone, the author describes how the work of Marconi, Bell, Faraday and others all went in to the various radio and telephony technologies that make up the modern cell phone. But, I would argue that the most important part of the cell phone is the cheap and ubiquitous switching networks behind it. This is-the technology that lets me use hundreds of hours of airtime for a nominal cost. And that wasn’t the work of a single inventor, but entire industries.

* A similar argument could be made for how one determines when an invention is really “invented”. The Wright Brothers flew a couple hundred feet at Kitty Hawk. Is that really an airplane? Sure, it was the proof-of-concept, and had a number of “eureka” moments contained in it and was the springboard for F-18’s and 747’s. But, on its own, it was about as useful as a kite.

=== Summary ===

My objections are mild and perhaps nitpicky. I enjoyed the book, and learned a few things that I never knew before about any number of famous inventions. It is certainly a fun read for any geek, or wanna-be geek, and the pages flew by way too soon.

Wouldn't have passed without this book

I just passed the PMP exam today (3 Mar 16), and this was one of the books issued to me in a prep course. I completed all the sample questions in the book, and when I took my test this morning I was actually wishing there were more Questions about network diagram on the exam! I can't believe how confident and prepared I felt for the exam after completing this workbook.

I thought this book was extremely helpful. This book teaches you all about network diagrams and is filled with various questions and solutions that help you really understand network diagrams. It is helpful learning the material and then being able to test your knowledge with the questions in the book. After a few questions I felt that I was an expert at network diagrams. In addition to this book I also read Aileen's other books including:
1. How to get every Earned Value question right on the PMP Exam
2. How to get every subcontract question right on the PMP exam
3. PMP Exam Simplified
Reading the PMBOK isn't enough to pass the exam! These books together will help you really understand the information and pass it the first time!

ok for my needs

I purchased strictly as a PMP question workbook to practice for the exam. It does the trick but for a small book with not a lot of content there shouldn't be misspellings and poor grammar. With all of the author's credentials, I expected more. Misspellings & poor grammar are just inexcusable. Also, the questions jump around topic...in this case network diagram. Suggestion would be to have 5 or 10 questions in a row on the same or similar area (free float, float, FF, FS, SS, SF, etc.) to really reinforce topics....as opposed to jumping from a PERT calculation to the definition of critical chain, to which path is the critical path.

Kathy Ceceri is the author of activity books for kids and families, including Robotics: Discover the Science and Technology of the Future. A lot better than the magazine for kids

This is a really fun book. It has several projects in there, some for younger kids, some for kids around 10 or so, but ideas that older kids could build off of. Some of the ideas are just simple paper folding, but some are light up projects, which are fun and simple, but require a little more in supplies.

I was really happy about this book. My kids used to subscribe to make magazine, but everything required a 3D printer, or 1000.00 in supplies, so we let that subscription go. This book is more basic, and the supplies are more accessible.

Good introduction to paper manipulation, if you're unfamiliar with it.

For anyone new to paper manipulation, this book presents what should prove to be new ideas. The ideas behind adding circuitry, light elements, and "self-folding" possibilities to your paper work will excite your kids, and get them thinking about new ways to manipulate paper.

For me, however, I was very excited to see what this book had to offer... and found much of it to be what I've already seen and done over my 20 years of teaching Art. Many older - as well as Origami - books that I have contain the same ideas and paper creations. That doesn't make these projects any less fun or engaging for today's child, it's just a repackaging of many ideas that have been floating around for quite some time now, paired with some new innovations.

Presenting the book's content as the author has will undoubtedly pull in those teachers more inclined to search for new and different ways to present mathematical and scientific concepts. There's nothing wrong with that whatsoever - far from, in fact. So long as the ideas are presented and grasped, that's the most important thing, and this book will do that for anyone that forgets the value of Art in teaching Math and Science. Quilling has been around for years, as have the Origami concepts here, so for any long-time Art teachers considering this book, you're probably best taking a look at a copy in a library or local bookseller to see if the concepts here are new enough for your uses.

Overall, the ideas presented here are bound to grasp the attention of the student patient enough to properly craft the projects here (probably best for 4th grade and up), even if not all the projects are so new.

Contagious ingenuity with the simplest of materials!

I saw Kathy Ceceri 's book, Make: Paper Inventions, in a bookstore and picked one up for some kids in my extended family. I plan to get another copy for myself!

It caught my eye because I'm an origami enthusiast, creator, and teacher. I'd classify only a few of the projects as origami as such -- Paper Dragon Curve Fractal, Action Origami Robot Worm, Open Weave Paper Link Wristband and Basket. They range from simple "playground" origami to intermediate-level models. If you can fold a fortune teller/cootie-catcher, you won't find these hard to make.

But the book has far more than origami: it tells you how to make paper itself, offers techniques to try (quilling, e.g.), and shows you all kinds of very interesting things to make/build out of paper. Excellent photographs and drawings. Very clear, engaging directions and discussions of the science/engineering principles behind the projects.
