"This is all based on human creativity, and the ability for us to advance and continuously improve with freedom from the remote tyranny of bad design. That's why the cultural question becomes interesting because at that point the culture can express itself in a creative way. It still has integrity because you're expressing yourself creatively within a context. Your solving for rich, local problems. All sustainability, like politics is local. It has to be." - William McDonough in [ours]

Review
"This is why Andrew Michler's concept of hyperlocalization is so fascinating and valuable. Because every building he shows is not only a product of its climate and its environment, but of its history, its culture, a reflection of the personalities of the people who built it and surround it." - from the foreword by Lloyd Alter, Professor of Sustainable Design at Ryerson University, editor of TreeHugger.com
"Cactus won't thrive in Minnesota, and mangroves don't flourish in Arizona. But the same damned building dominates the cityscape everywhere. As Andrew Michler makes clear in this wonderful book, that is spherically senseless. Buildings designed for their particular site can be ultra-efficient, beautiful, wondrously varied, and deeply resilient." - Denis Hayes, President Bullitt Foundation, Founder of Earth Day
"I recommend it to anyone who wants a richer understanding of what's going on, globally, in architecture. Michler's ability to deftly connect the dots across disciplines results in insights which are both smart and fun. What Michler's book finally shows us is that the world of architecture is pluralistic and dispersed, and it's at the beginning of a really important revolution; this is really exciting stuff."" -Anthony Denzer, Author of The Solar House, Associate Professor of Architectural Engineering at the University of Wyoming
"the book can be seen as a contemporary experimental guide for the future designers and produces different approaches to 'ordinary architecture' with regional sources or materials. (it) defines a new way of producing through provocative rules and limitations, removing all ambiguity about sustainable architecture. when michler's research studies and experimental works are put under the scope, it seems that he is exactly the right person to write this book." - designboom
"Hyperlocalization of Architecture is a new, fresh and uber-contextual book." -World Architecture Community
"In his forthcoming book, Hyperlocalization of Architecture, author and Passive House consultant Andrew Michler turns his lens to contemporary architecture, but his focus is on a very timeless concept." - Curbed
"Michler's keen analysis provides a new insight into each design in a way that illuminates the design lessons hidden within." - Eric Corey Freed, Architect & Author of Green Building and Remodeling For Dummies, Vice President, International Living Future Institute
"[ours] Hyperlocalization of Architecture brilliantly delves into contexts and operations which is what an architecture of sustainability is made up of. Reflecting on design, not flair, Michler perfectly inhabits design -if we redefine the word to indicate logic engaging with the environment. In so doing, he generates new powerful classifications of 'locale'." - Mitchell Joachim, Professor NYU and Co-Founder, Terreform ONE

About the Author
Born and raised in Oakland, California, Andrew Michler, LEED AP BD+C, CPHC, found his way to a pine forest in the Colorado Rockies where he has lived off-grid since 1995. His research has also led him to investigate Passive House. He designed and built the first international certified Passive House in Colorado which is free of foam and other toxic materials. Michler consults, through his firm Baosol llc, on low impact and adaptive building design and materials. His wide-ranging exploration of design and environmental impacthas led him all over the world. By Paul Hesson
A fascinating book for the non architect interested in the environment, climate, energy footprint and our ability to adapt to the changing needs of the people inhabiting our living and working spaces. Andrew shows us how design can create sustainable spaces without the historical reliance on technology.

By David S.T.
Andrew Michler's book is an artistic achievement as he takes the reader to seven areas of the world where he describes architecture's place in a changing climate environment. Michler traveled extensively to interview architects and photograph their buildings that are a response to place, regional sources and materials. The interviews with architects are a fascinating and insightful look at their philosophies and challenges as they bring new approaches to local sustainable projects. The photographs are stunning, capturing the essence of each building's unique design that reflects the place where it is. This book should be required reading for any architectural program that wants to understand the future of creating buildings that reflect design and not flair.

By Matthew French
A very smart writer, Michler has placed himself in the middle of the action to move architecture into true sustainability of materials and balance with the climate. In this book he has written about his first hand perceptions of architectural projects from all over the world, backed by years of writing and contemplating these issues. He questions the need for architects to develop signature styles; right on the edge of popular building science, Michler, suggests that architectural design should integrate an efficient use of resources as well as an exacting knowledge of the local weather patterns. Great pics and a well designed book too!
