About the Author
Philip Warburg is the author of Harvest the Wind: America’s Journey to Jobs, Energy Independence, and Climate Stability. He was president of the Conservation Law Foundation, New England's leading environmental advocacy group, from 2003 to 2009. Previously, he directed the Israel Union for Environmental Defense in Tel Aviv and was an attorney at the Environmental Law Institute in Washington, DC.

"Harness the Sun" is a compelling and important read. Highly recommended!

It's hard to overstate the importance of Philip Warburg's latest and highly readable book, "Harness the Sun." We humans are messing up the planet, irresponsibly burning fossil fuels and causing the globe to warm. Anybody who pines for a saner, safer, and more rational US energy policy should read this book and take its message to heart. Beautifully written and researched, "Harness the Sun" shows that solar energy can start playing a much larger role in our national life than we ever imagined -- and is already starting to do so. Powering our homes and economy with massive quantities of solar energy is no longer some futuristic dream. I salute this book for its accuracy, eloquence, passion, and compelling vision. We need to redouble our efforts to reduce our use of carbon-based fuels and leap on to the burgeoning solar energy bandwagon. As Philip Warburg writes at the end of his fascinating book, "The tools for advancing a more sustainable energy future are within our reach. It is our obligation and privilege to use them."

It’s especially good because the author

Harvesting the Sun is a gem of a journey through the solar landscape and into our renewable future. It’s especially good because the author, Philip Warburg, gives the story credibility and a compelling personal narrative by showing us how he and his wife have walked the solar walk with everything from the panels on the roof of their house to the hybrid plug-in in their garage powered by that solar electricity. I strongly recommend this for people who already care about renewable energy and want to know how to make it work for them on an individual scale -- and for those who wonder whether solar can make a difference to their community, our nation, and the world, and are open to what seems to me the irrefutable case that Warburg builds.

If you think you know about solar . . .

As evidenced by some of the statements in the few negative reviews of this book, there is no shortage of ignorance about the present state of solar power. Until I read "Harness the Sun," I shared some of these misconceptions -- solar is probably not right for a cold northern climate; failure to meet utility demand at night makes this technology impractical; you have to shovel snow off the panels. I was wrong about all three.

It's not that Warburg cheerleads for solar. He is honest and analytical about its problems and obstacles. But along the way, a reader learns a great deal. Perhaps the biggest breaking news for me is that there are promising ways to store solar energy during the day to generate electricity at night. I found his mix of technical details and stories about the very interesting people involved in solar to be a perfect blend. If you are not technically inclined, enjoy meeting the characters he interviews. If you are, enjoy both.

I'd be interested to see wind power (which Warburg has also written about in "Harvest the Wind"), solar, and conservation/efficiency analyzed based on their relative costs and environmental tradeoffs, but that would be outside of the scope of this book. But if Warburg had tried in "Harness the Sun" to convince me that solar (or any form of power generation) is free of such constraints, I would have stopped reading. Instead, he lays out a persuasive case that the United States has a vast untapped resource waiting to be utilized.

When Mr. Wright died, he had lived the entire second half of the nation’s existence. William Allin Storrer worked with the dean of American architectural historians, Henry-Russell Hitchcock, author of In the Nature of Materials (the first and still important work about Wright’s architecture) in the production of The Architecture of Frank Lloyd Wright, A Complete Catalog. Over a dinner to celebrate completion of the research in Hitchcock’s archive, Hitchcock commented that there were still houses out there that nobody knew about: “Wright would drive me through Evanston, River Forest and Oak Park, and Hyde Park” confided he. “Every so often Wright would point to a building and say, ‘I built that, but nobody’ll ever know.’“ This book reveals several works about which “nobody’ll ever know,” works now believed to have been by Wright or by Wright in collaboration with another architect. It is the story of Wright’s achieving half of his goal, an American Architecture, in his Prairie era homes.

Frank Lloyd Wright As I Have Never Understood Him Before

This book and its sequels, "Frank Lloyd Wright: Designing Democratic America, Parts One and Two," are the most valuable books I have (out of 98) for understanding how Wright created his house plans. Combine these with Storrer's "Frank Lloyd Wright Companion" for reference and you have tremendous insight into how Wright went about creating his plans and elevations, choosing materials, selecting colors, and so on. Storrer shows the elements Wright chose to create his domestic architecture, which ones changed and which ones stayed the same over Wright's long career. Many other writers have elucidated aspects of Wright's designs that Storrer does not mention, but none have been so enlightening to me.

Nothing particularly interesting here. Title is pompous and over-promises by a lot.

Don't ask me what prompted me to look at this one, except the over-the-top title and it was on one of the suggested lists. I'll get straight to the point. This is your basic "write an eBook for money" using basic concepts, some flowery language, and a Marketing Secrets book to name and promote the thing.

It's not that it's bad, it's just that it's not what it says it is. It's basically a distillation of many self-help and motivational texts with a catchy title. There is nothing "banned" in here. There are no secrets. There is nothing about getting anyone to do anything "on command". At least "How to Win Friends and Influence People" had a fairly honest title. This is just a cheap knockoff with a grandiose, pompous cover.

All you really need to know is at the bottom of the title page:
" Copyright 2015 by Make Profits Easy LLC"

I'd say this doesn't refer to you, the reader making profits easily, but rather the author. I'd guess "Daniel Smith" isn't a real person either, but I didn't research it. I'd also guess (as another reviewer less graciously noted) that the other 5-Star Reviews are probably shill accounts.

If you want a simple explanation of how to act (or learn to be) more confident and more positive, it's a fine short read. There isn't anything extraordinary here, nor anything particularly harmful either. It's mostly common sense. I only looked at it because it was free on Kindle Unlimited.

Fascinating story of a compromise that works

The average American probably thinks in terms of the metric system only when talking about guns (9 mm. Glock, 105 mm cannon), drugs (81 mg baby aspirin, 10 kilo of marijuana seized by cops), booze (75 cl bottles of wine, 1.75 cl bottles of whiskey or vodka) and every four years, the Olympics (all those swimming and field events in meters and kilometers). And he or she never notices that the weights of contents of a can or package in the supermarket are marked in grams as well as ounces, thanks to a 1994 law mandating dual labeling.

And nobody seems to remember the 1970s drive to convert America to the metric system, one of the few remainders of which are mileage signs in kilometers in some states bordering Canada, to welcome Canadian tourists and to show we love them.

John Bemelmans Marciano tells the fascinating story of America's long history of efforts to get this country to simplify its standards of measurement, get them in line with those of France, an early standards world power, and finally to attempt to adopt the metric system wholeheartedly, as most of the rest of the world has done. It's a long history, going back to George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Benjamin Franklin and John Quincy Adams, all early proponents of using decimals, initially applied to coinage. On the 200th anniversary of the United States, President Ford signed the Metric Conversion Act of 1975 to establish "a national policy of coordinating and planning for the increased use of the metric measurement system in the United States." Ronald Reagan killed that Board in 1982, and it disappeared without a whimper.

So we still use ounces and inches, pounds and yards, gallons and acres, you name it. But at least the dollar had been divided into 100 cents in the 1800s. And the American stock exchanges in 2001 switched to pricing stock in decimals, after using 16ths since the 1700s stock markets, which traded in Spanish pieces of eights.

But first, John Marciano tells the history of measurements and attempts at international standardization, and of how the metric system was created during the French Revolution. And for those who have long forgotten European History 101 (and who hasn't?) he tells the story, focusing on the role of measurements. Who knew there were hundreds of different systems on the Continent way into the 1800s? He describes how the industrial revolution, steam powered ships and railways, and international trade drove efforts to create internationally accepted standards, with strong forces pushing the metric system over "competing" systems. One development he fails to mention is the invention of the daguerreotype, the first practical photography system in 1839, donated to the world, except to England, by France. American daguerreotypists generally used a standard sized full plate, 6.5 x 8.5 inches (16.5 x 21.5 cm), that could be divided into smaller sizes, as half, quarter, sixth, ninth and 16th plate. A big "I never knew that" fact is that while the metric system was always promoted as boon to international commerce, the foot is used for what has meant more for trade than any recent development: the American "invention" of the 20-foot container, which is a world standard.

"Whatever happened to the metric system?" is a fascinating story, told clearly and introducing a wonderful group of metric and standardization enthusiasts, with one prize achievement being the creation of the Euro in the EU. Explaining "How Americans Kept Its Feet," Marciano writes: "Where converting to metric measures wouldn't be convenient, Americans have kept their customary measures and are glad of it." A perfect example is that auto engine sizes are now given in liters instead of cubic inches, while the same cars' fuel performance is given in miles per gallon.

Go metric

Well written, but with massive historical, tangential departures from the title of the book. Only a small portion of this book addresses the failure to implement the metric system in the US in recent decades. Worst of all, the author clearly states his allegiance to the old imperial system and his belief that the US should not move any further in the metric direction. Ugggghhhh.......

Metrics And Revolutions - A Great Scientific Read!

I found in this book a deep thought wrapped in small details: that revolution prepares the soil for change, but unless the seeds of change are planted in that season, it will wither and die.

The revolutions - scientific and political - of the 17th and 18th centuries provided an impetus as well as an environment for changing the way the world was measured. New governments wanted a system that would be, given the nature of the American and French revolutions, equal for all men.

Marciano has built the tale out of inches and grams of facts: the urge to standardize that grew in the infant republics of the U.S.A. and France, the desire of natural scientists to base measurements - time, volume and temperature, even justice, as much as distance - on a single standard that could be observed in nature, and the goal of setting up a system that would be "for all men and for all time".

Along the way, he shows us how the leading lights of these scientific and political radicals each made a contribution to (or battled with) the metrics that would become the SI/metric/European system, and details how the nature-based system was subverted by the partisan passions of the French revolutionaries, and then even more by Napoleon.

From there, Marciano shows why the metric measurement system failed to be adopted in the U.S., even while its currency was "decimalized" and its code of justice rationalized. That metrication failed not once, but four separate times between 1786 and now, Marciano shows to be due to a rational assessment of the cost of change and the inertia of public resistance once the revolution was complete.

My favorite quote from the book comes early: "I did think that Europeans do certain things better than Americans. In my heart of hearts, however, I never believed that one of them was the metric system."

By the way, if I could give fractional stars, this book would get 4 and 5/8ths stars, only because the charts were not easily visible on the Kindle (even with Zoom). I needed to open the book on my laptop Kindle Reader to enjoy the charts.

This is a book to enjoy for the science history as well as for the history of metrics. I got kilometers of enjoyment out of it!

Joseph B. Raskin is an independent scholar. He is widely regarded as an authority on unbuilt subway systems, on which he has been interviewed by the New York Times. He is Assistant Director of Government and Community Relations for MTA New York City Transit.

A Century of Missed Opportunities

There’s a building at 2nd Avenue and 33rd street with a plaza in front, it’s open to the public and very popular with smokers. I never could figure out why anyone would waste the space on a plaza; surely the owners must have lost money on the unused space. But a according to this book, the zoning rules required the building to have the plaza; the city wanted to use it for a subway entrance! The building was from the 1970’s, a time when Mayor Lindsay and Governor Rockefeller had planned the 2nd Avenue Subway line, all the way to downtown Manhattan. It would be almost 40 years before it was built, a delay that resulted from a combination of financial troubles and a fractured city government. Meanwhile, the plaza remains

Joseph Raskin has opened a big can of worms with this book. He brings to light the massive number of subway lines that were planned throughout the area but stayed just that; plans and nothing more. Never mind the 2nd Avenue subway line, that’s been in the works for years. I’m taking about a subway line that would’ve run all the way to the East Bronx. If you’ve ever been there (which is unlikely unless you live there) you’ll know you can’t get there without a car. There was even a plan to build a subway line straight across the city to the Hudson River.

Raskin’s research for this book places most of the blame on Mayors who didn’t care for the subway that much. As the city expanded outward, there was a push to build more roadways for the cars and less emphasis on public transport. And what could exemplify the “subways don’t count” attitude like the great Robert Moses, who wrecked the Bronx with his Cross Bronx Expressway? Perhaps the blame should fall on the people as well; more and more New Yorkers drank the cool aid about the “house and car” dream after WWII. There was, however, a movement to build houses on the route of the unplanned subways. Housing was built on Burke Avenue, just because the builders anticipated a subway line going that way.

This book should be required reading for a course on NYC history (if such a course exists) because public transit is a major part of life in this city. It ranks up there with Robert Caro’s The Power Broker and Jane Jacobs Death and Life of American Cities. I applaud Raskin’s effort in writing this book; his massive research has paid off.

Missed Opportunity

I've been waiting for a book like this for a long time, and I was so excited to learn of it. And so my disappointment in the actual result was profound. While it's clear that Raskin knows the stories of the unbuilt lines in tremendous (even excessive) detail, the organization of the book is baffling, and the lack of maps and legible diagrams is unforgivable--especially since Raskin refers to the lines by their historic names (e.g., the Sea Beach Line instead of the N). This is an understandable decision, but it must make the book daunting for those who haven't internalized the old names. A list of lines and names in the back helps a little, but a map or series of maps would have made a huge difference.

I know maps are expensive and that old ones often don't reproduce well. But Raskin needed to make the investment in new drawings to illustrate much of what he talks about. I'm very familiar with New York's transit geography, but I repeatedly had to go to other sources to figure out what he was referring to. The narrative structure is equally baffling, with stories coming and going in no particular chronological order. I can't imagine what a more casual reader would make of this.

I really wanted to love this book, but I think only the most diehard of NYC railfans will get through this happily.

good thorough book

A thoroughly researched book rich in footnotes. The theme is largely political showing the conflicts between proposed routes, construction (subway vs. el), real estate developers vs. riders, private management (IRT and BMT) vs. city constructed and managed. (IND), and the conflicts between state and city. There were endless and enervating political delays which delayed construction of new routes for decades. The impacts of the great depression and WW2 are well drawn. One is impressed at the power held by various mayors, Robert Moses, and administrators who were advancing their own political agendas at the expense of sound economic and engineering considerations. These factors persist to this day. It is a wonder that the LIRR to the eastside, the extension of the 7 to the westside , and the initial phase of the 2nd avenue subway are underway despite the political and economic environment.

On the negative side, the maps and figures are often poor copies barely readable with a magnifying glass. I wish for clearer and, perhaps, redrawn supporting artifacts.
