With an economy of words and gently repeating patterns, the text informs readers about the emotional ups and downs of this tiny band of friends: what makes them happy (getting what they've waited for), what makes them sad (when one of them goes away), and what surprises them (gifts, visitors, new friends.) Along with happiness and friendship, there are small moments of grief, anxiety, and existential wonder—all thoughtfully and authentically depicted with childlike honesty and optimism. On thick, creamy pages, Henkes uses brown ink with touches of watercolor and colored pencil in muted shades of pink, green, and blue to depict the softly rounded figures, shown small before the expanse of the four-paned window. Lovely, sweet, and restful.

This book is absolutely lovely. It is also nothing like what I expected -- apparently there is a whole Kevin Henkes world that we need to discover. We know and love Henkes from Chrysanthemum, Owen, Lilly, Wemberly; you know, his wonderful mice. Those books are funny, both in the text and in the pictures, and a little bit silly, but also sweet, loving, and wonderful for children who are facing transitions or who worry. As Kindergarten begins this month, we've been reading them non-stop at our house. Waiting is, in many ways, completely different from those books. Visually it is in a different style, and it is lovely. Breathtaking. Sweet. Timeless. In the mice books, I enjoyed the illustrations as part of the story, but here in Waiting, I enjoy the illustrations on their own. As for the story, there is a little humor, but it's much subtler; I smiled but I didn't laugh. There is not a central character with a trial to overcome or a milestone to reach. It is a calm story with not a whole lot going on. And this is why I feel, at root, it fits in with the Henkes' work we know and love. After reading Waiting, I immediately bought it, because it is so perfect to read with my little ones in this September of school transitions, tiredness, and stress. It is relaxing and lovely. Both my brand-new preschooler and my brand-new Kindergartner recommend this book.

Picture books are for everyone!

I had the privilege of hearing Kevin Henkes talk about his new book, Waiting, and read it aloud at our local independent bookstore. He told us how Waiting grew from an idea, an observation, to a story. He also shared how the artwork evolved. The story will appeal to a wide range of ages. For me, I think about how gazing out the window changes over time. How we as viewers can share looking out the same window but expect and desire widely different things from life. Picture books are amazing. Kevin Henkes is a charming and talented author.

Not for sensitive kids

Love love love Kevin Henkes and was excited for this book. Was hoping it would teach my kids the value of patience. The illustrations are gorgeous (as usual!). However, the story made my son cry :(. The toys in the story are alive (much like Toy Story) and they are waiting for something to happen. One day a new toy joined them and "left and never returned" (illustration shows a toy that fell off the shelf and has broken into tons of pieces). Lots of tears from my sensitive boy :(

About the Author
Born and raised in Peru, Alberto grew up in the perfect environment to become a tireless traveler. Alberto's dad worked in remote areas in the Peruvian Andes due his profession in the mining industry, which required the family to regularly travel deep into the mountains. Exposed to the beauty and magic of Peru's mountain regions, Alberto's appreciation for these areas developed from an early age. Alberto's dad had his first motorcycle (Honda C90) when he was a teenager and when Alberto turned 12, his dad bought him a 50cc scooter which he rode until he was 17. Alberto came to Canada at the age of 23 searching for new experiences and challenges. Five years later, he met Naomi, his partner in life. Alberto was re-introduced to the world of two wheels by Naomi, who not only influenced Alberto's decision to get a motorcycle but also taught him how to operate a proper motorbike. Photography was one of the hobbies Alberto developed while in Canada. Combining his passion for traveling, the incomparable thrill he gets from riding motorcycles and his sharp eye for photography was a spontaneous occurrence. Naomi Tweddle was born in Victoria, Canada and grew up in a small island community in the Southern Gulf Islands. From an early age Naomi was exposed to motorcycles as her parents took her and her sister on bike trips aboard their 78 Triumph Boneville and 73 Honda CB. When motorcycle adventure travel became a thing Naomi was naturally drawn to the idea. Naomi has documented her travels spanning over 100,000km and 12 countries through blogging and photography and continues to pursue travel opportunities riding motorcycles.

Frustrating and poorly organized

This one's going back. They need an editor. On nearly every page the Figures that illustrate what's being described are on the opposite or next page?! Screenshots are not clear, and there are no helpful images showing where the drop-down menus are or zoomed-in shots to help locate tools, menus, or settings. This is a book that was rushed to press and it looks like it. I bought it because the T of C looked comprehensive and the review seemed positive. Turns out it was probably written by the publisher. Spend your money on another manual.

If I put all the books in a pile from best at the top to worst at the bottom I ...

Over that last three decades I have bought dozens of computer books. Most have been graphic design. If I put all the books in a pile from best at the top to worst at the bottom I would have to dig a hole to place this book. I just started learning Maya and you say this book is for beginners who need help navigating the gigantic cacophony of menus that make up this wonderful software. Ok so you tell me to select Animate Ghost Selected Options menu. Ok so how am I going to find that command???? You cant add one simple sentence to guide me to find this command. Throughout this entire book I spend hours wandering thru the menus of Maya trying to find the one simple click on your tutorials when all you had to do is add a few words to guide me. And all the pics for the tutorials are on the next page. You have to flip back and forth!! Ok so I have never posted a bad review on anything in my life because I believe that tolerance is a virtue. But this lack of effort or respect to people who are trying to better themselves in the creative, graphics world has motivated me to express my frustration. Oh yea you also wasted my hard earned money!!!! Sorry!!

How to build a quadcopter drone I downloaded on Samsung Tablet KINDLE, has alot of just what I was looking for, what's needed and how to, and they is a lot more to it then you would think, a real hobby it take time and patience and money. The importance of a balanced diet

The subject of this book is a very common one for any person at the present. On the streets and even in the market, food is being prepared with so many preservatives and calories that people tend to get fat or sick when eating them. I saw and bought this book (on a special promotion) looking to find different methods for food preparation and distribution during the day/week. I do not suffer from hypertension but, in my family we are used to eat sane and natural, so, this book will really help us.
I would like to recommend this book to the whole Amazon’s community since it is a very complete one. When reading this book, you will understand more the essence of a diet, what and when to eat, and the exact measures to serve. It is full of little tips and instructions that will help adapt yourself to this strict diet.

Excellent manual, full of tools and techniques to speed up your reading and comprehension rate

It is said that the average adult can read around 300 words a minute, which is not much faster than the average 8th grader. Meanwhile most speed readers come in around 1500 words per minute, with the world champ knocking out 4700 wpm. The difference in speed is staggering really. My husband has spent months working his way through Terry Goodkind's Sword of Truth series, the same series I finished in three days. When you think about it, there's really no excuse not to learn how to speed read.

This manual on learning how to triple your reading speed is full of sound tips and strategies for breaking the bad habits that slow you down. Many of these habits are ones most people aren't even aware they do, such as sub-vocalization or regression. This explains how to stop these habits and embrace new, productive ones that will allow you to not only read faster but achieve a very high memorizing speed as well. Obviously reading fast doesn't do you any good if you can't remember what you just read so this provides you with tools and techniques to ensure your comprehension and retention aren't sacrificed for speed. While I already read at a very high rate of speed, I found the chapter on Dynamic Reading to be very helpful in boosting my comprehension rate, which in turn lets me read even faster. Overall an excellent manual for anyone looking to increase their reading speed and improve their rate of absorption.

Great guide to speed reading

I have always wanted to know how to speed read but actually thought that this might be a skill that you had to have naturally. I was thrilled to find out that this is something that can be learned and author John Lake has written a great guide to doing so with his "Speed Reading". Lake gives a good background on speed reading as well as giving the reader the tools to find their baseline. There are several useful tools and techniques taught here for increasing reading speed and efficiency and my speed reading skills have been improving the more that I practice what I've learned in this book. A great guide that is well-written and very well presented.

Styled as the Master Builder, 73-year-old Moses constructed highways, bridges, and parks. Fascinating read, if you ignore the errors

I'm one-third of the way through "Tomorrow-land/The 1964-65 World's Fair and the Transformation of America" and am finding it fascinating.

Its insights into the planning of the fair and the heavy-handed management by Robert Moses are valuable, and complement Robert Caro's pioneering work about Moses, "The Power Broker."

This book, however, is sloppily edited and proofread. Too bad Lyons Press apparently didn't supply either form of editorial oversight. Contractor Del Webb and New York Senator Jacob Javits have their names misspelled repeatedly in the book (the Javits Center in New York City is only the largest convention center in that city; how hard would it be for a New York City author to get that right?). Ed Sullivan's TV show wasn't "the most important half-hour of television in show business," it was an hour. Little errors and grammatical mistakes follow, and compromise what could have been an exceptional new history of the World's Fair.

Schizophrenic, error-prone, but still worth reading

It's a book that can't decide whether it wants to be a history of the 1964-65 World's Fair or a summary of American and New York City cultural history in the early 1960s. It swings back and forth jarringly between the two. The chapters covering race relations, music, the civil rights movement, etc., are all basically summaries of material that has been covered extensively by other writers, and I found that they could easily be skipped or skimmed. I would have preferred that Tirella stick to the book's raison d'etre--the fair itself.

On the positive side--and this is why I still give the book a thumbs-up--Tirella provides extensive detail about Robert Moses's role in creating and developing the fair and the behind-the-scenes maneuvering that led to the development of some of the pavilions. He also covers some of the public reaction, both positive and negative, to the fair. These sections are very valuable and make the book essential reading for anyone interested in this fair, and worthwhile for those interested in New York City history or fairs and expositions generally.

As other reviewers have noted, the book is rife with factual and typographical errors. I get the sense that it would have benefited from another year or two of reflection and editing, but I suspect it was rushed out to maximize sales in conjunction with the 50th anniversary of the fair. Perhaps the author has a second edition in him?

An Outstanding Look Back

I have never written a book review before but I was so pleased with Tomorrow-Land I felt compelled to write this review. Joseph Tirella has written a history of the 1964 World's Fair and tied it to the cultural upheavals of the sixties in an entertaining but informative way. I was 13 when the Fair opened in the Spring of 1964; old enough to appreciate the wonders of the fair but too young to understand the history that was evolving in front of me. This book recaps the important events of the times and explains the politics of the era while not neglecting the important impact the Beatles, Dylan and pop art had on the baby boomer generation. The book also gives the reader some insights into who Robert Moses was and his place in New York's history. I enjoy reading history especially when a book (such as this one) does not read like a textbook. Tomorrow-Land succeeds on multiple levels. I thoroughly enjoyed the book and highly recommend it to anyone who is interested in reading about the civil rights movement and the changing times that were occurring in the mid sixties.
