If you want to improve your grades, read this book
By Doug Erlandson
Geetanjali Mukherjee was born and grew up in India. After receiving her high school education in New Delhi, she did her undergraduate work at the University of Warwick (UK) and did her graduate work at Cornell University, earning a Masters in Public Administration. In this book, geared primarily for college and graduate students, but also appropriate for high school students, Ms. Mukherjee presents a detailed roadmap for how to do superior work in school. Her thesis is that what makes for an outstanding student is not native ability but the ability to study effectively.
In this book, we are given 39 "tips" for learning how to study, how to prepare for exams, how to write papers, how to overcome procrastination, and, in general, how to get good grades. For example, we're told how to deal with distractions (such as email, phone calls, social media, etc.), how to break down larger assignments into smaller chunks, how to use small segments of time effectively, how to get help for understanding difficult material, how to prepare for and take an exam, and much more.
Having spent much of my life in academia as a student or teacher, I can say with confidence that most of the advice given in this book is sound and, if followed, will increase a student's chances of doing extremely well in a course. Although some of what Ms. Mukherjee says was advice that I hadn't heard before, as I read the book I realized that to the extent that I had followed similar principles, they had added immeasurably to my own ability to do well as a student, particularly in graduate school.
The book is written in an easy to understand fashion, provides quite a few practical examples, and does not contain a lot of fluff. It's a book that will be of benefit to any student.

A detailed, structured guide to examination preparation
By RN
A detailed, structured guide to better time and learning management.
Geetanjali Mukherjee provides copious useful information and instruction in her guide to improving exam grades. Building upon her personal experience in exams based curricula, she crafts a helpful study guide for students of all levels of capability. She writes to the doubts and confusion students may go through.
I couldn't escape a feeling that much of what Ms. Mukherjee writes is - common sense. Perhaps this has something to do with my own educational experiences. I've never had to "work hard" for any examinations, standardized or otherwise. But I haven't been a topper either, always hanging around in the top group, barely making my (lucky?) entrance into such hallowed clubs. Good time management, good habits, generally, and an inner individual motivation to really learn. Good food habits too - and no one had to tell me! I've always done well in subjects where I've loved my teachers. I think this aspect - that there aren't any bad students, only bad teachers - is missed in the book. But the book is for the typical student, not the carefree philosopher.
A comparison between educational systems - such as the Finnish vs. the American vs. the Indian - can add much value too. Children in Finland are known to do very little homework. They spend about 20 hours per week in classes, and much more in broad life skills education outside of classes. Children in Montessori educational systems similarly learn a lot more hands-on, at a pace suited to themselves, and excel at learning what they discover as their aptitude.
It shouldn't be just about getting A-pluses, should it?
An easy-to-read book that diligent teenagers and parents and parents may well enjoy.

Good Pointers !
By Dr. Joseph S. Maresca
Geetanjali's book would be very helpful for a struggling student desiring to improve grades to a "B" or an "A". These days, teaching staffs have to comply "at least loosely" with the notion of a "Bell Curve". It's not a hard and fast rule; however, the notion of a Bell Curve helps to curb grade inflation.
Geetanjali covers the essential elements of good study habits with an emphasis on positivity, setting goals, avoiding distractions and segmenting complicated projects into smaller snippets. The author spends quite a bit of time on planning and organizing work so that the assignments can be completed with less pressure on the student.
There are times when even the best efforts of students are stymied by a lack of comprehension of the material. In these cases, a tutor needs to be engaged. Most academic institutions make provisos for tutoring needs. Generally, there are libraries, learning centers and teacher assistants to help alleviate the day-to-day grind.
In the experience of this reviewer, students need to consult with tutors at various junctures during the semester-particularly in the maths, sciences and in engineering. In addition, students need to master the prerequisites BEFORE taking the course - not while the course is in progress.
Teaching staffs are moving away from the notion that a mid-term and final should constitute the whole grade. Now, teachers are considering class participation, testing, papers and group projects so that the subject is presented in a variety of settings. This new emphasis simulates the idea of a work product, as well as, classwork done within a peer group structure or setting.
Overall, Geetanjali's book could be very helpful in raising grades although most curricula are designed so that students can receive assessments in the "C+" to an "A" range with an honest effort. A better title for this book would be "Anyone Can Improve Their Grades-How To Beat Procrastination, Reduce Stress And Improve Your Grades With An Honest Effort".
