Lawrence Susskind is Ford Professor of Urban and Environmental Planning at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), and the Founder and Chief Knowledge Officer of the Consensus Building Institute (CBI).
Danya Rumore is the Associate Director of the Environmental Dispute Resolution Program and a Visiting Assistant Professor at the University of Utah.
Carri Hulet is a Senior Associate with CBI.

As a text primarily concerned with how coastal areas can and do manage climate risk, this collection of case studies provides a valuable resource for planning professionals and scholars who work both near or far from the sea. It is not just relevant for the management of coastal communities. Since the book's foundation is built upon empirically rich examples and analytically deep descriptions, the methods and overview of climate change management for planners in a coastal setting are also applicable within communities whose geographical features pose similar challenges through different forms of climate, social or ecological variability.
Returning to its content, I think it's important to stress that a key strength of this book for readers is its healthy mix of both qualitative and quantitative data, and the eye-opening analyses that follow. The authors are clear in describing their observations in a register that is compelling and believable, but they do not stop there. Since a large majority of the efforts of this book are based upon NECAP, The New England Climate Adaptation Project, the methods of which include questionnaires, the authors are also able to marshal statistical evidence that significantly deepen the ostensible attitudes that are often a part of the lived experience of coastal communities. In some cases, the statical analyses challenge or augment some of the observations, which, to a discerning reader working far from a coastal environment, may notice patterns that could also be present within her or his own community that stands to manage climate risk.
Beyond what is presented, how the authors articulate their contexts, project, data and recommendations should compel readers to return to this book again and again. The book is concise and written in a register that is friendly to coastal community members, planning professionals and scholars alike. That should come as no surprise since Larry Susskind and his co-authors Rumore, Hulet and Field's corpora are among some of the most accessible and engaging in their respective fields.

A timely book for educators, students and general public

This book is a timely and important addition to the growing literature on climate change adaptation. In particular, it fills an important gap in terms of how coastal communities can build local response and preventative steps to reduce the inevitable impacts of climate change. While most cities and towns across the US are generally aware of the potential range of risks that climate change will bring, there is a clear lack of understanding about how communities can increase their resilience to climate change impacts. This helps explain why few communities have taken meaningful action to prepare for climate risks. The book advocates for communities to engage in collective risk management. Drawing from its extensive case studies across New England, the book outlines various strategies and steps communities can take in order to reduce their collective risk - from cultivating community awareness, to enhancing the capacity of community members. It discusses how tactics such as role-playing can enhance understanding of risks and build local capacity to adapt. The book will be of interest to local communities and college students and educators alike, providing food for thought in terms of collective climate change risks and the challenges communities face in responding to them, but more importantly, the solutions, and how we can increase our resilience collectively.

For the first time in human history, our external environment is no longer static or predictable. Within the lifespan of a person—or a building, or a sewage treatment plant—environmental conditions such as sea level, summer temperatures and storm intensities can increase enough to make traditional design parameters fail.
Our current planning strategies, including the concept of a “100-year storm,” are no longer adequate to prepare communities for new climate extremes. Bravo to Lawrence Susskind, Danya Rumore, Carri Hulet and Patrick Field for field-testing and sharing their curricula on how communities can manage climate-related risks so that they can continue to thrive and grow.
