Circling the Sun is a novelized account of the life of Beryl Markham written by Paula McLain. Beryl broke all the rules for a proper young lady as she grew up in colonial Kenya then broke ground for women everywhere, first as a horse trainer and then as an aviator. Her headstrong determination did not serve her as well, however, when it came to her personal life. She plunged into two youthful marriages that imploded and one earth-shattering but doomed affair. Paula McLain weaves all this together into a novelized biography of the first half of Beryl's unique life that takes her from childhood to her attempt at age 34 to become the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic from Europe to Canada.
In 1904, as a toddler, Beryl moved to Kenya, then known as British East Africa, with her parents, Clara and Charles Clutterbuck, and her older brother, Dickie...

Can a dude like this book?
By Ryan J. Dejonghe
Can a dude like this book? A lot of my reviewing friends have been chanting this book's praises saying it is one of the best they've read this year. Most of these folks are women. Actually, all of them. I wanted to know what's so special about Beryl Markham (whom I never heard of) and her life in Africa 100 years ago. Seriously, what gives?
This summary answers that question. So part of it, yes, is about a woman in African breaking all the rules of what women were supposed to be. Okay. However, what I'm learning through this summary is that Paula McLain, the book's author, is a huge draw to what makes this book so special. Not only is her writing style great "vivid descriptions of exotic locales, grand adventure, and sweeping romance" but the themes she includes are powerful--even for a "dude" to appreciate.
McLain uses experiences throughout the book to illustrate many themes, most in particular that of freedom. More poignantly, there is an episode of Beryl with "Paddy the lion". (Remind you of any recent headlines?) The author also references the freedoms of Africa itself, in turning from British East Africa to the colony of Kenya. But don't worry, it's all outlined here in the summary.
Aside from the summary, discussion of themes, and analysis of writing style, this summary also highlights the ten main characters in this book.
If you are thinking about getting this book or just want to see what the hubbub is about, this is an excellent summary to use.

OUT OF AFRICA --- the flip side of Baroness Karen Blixen
By W.T.Hoffman
Summary & Analysis is a good way to decide if investing $25-$30 for a book, and 10-15 hours of time, will be worth the effort. Librarians, literature teachers, book club presidents, many people can benefit from investing a few dollars and fifteen minutes, to discover a new writer, a new genre, or a new subject. You get plot explained, main characters categorized, and themes considered. Not bad for a few bucks.
Paula McLain's CIRCLING THE SUN is a novel based on an autobiography by the first woman to fly a airplane solo between Europe and Canada. As a young girl, Beryl Markham was a wild child who grew up in Kenya, when it was a British colony. Her mother hated Africa, so returned to England, leaving young Beryl to be raised by her devil may care father. She gravitated to local tribes, and learned to love the culture and wildlife of Africa. Her first marriage was at 16, it failed, so did others. She was sexually reckless, possibly amoral, even by today's standards. She made her way in life training horses, while hobnobbing with English aristocracy. The great love of her life was Denys, a pilot who lead the occasional safari. However, Denys was in love with another woman, Karen, who was minor Danish aristocracy, and came to Africa with her Baron husband, to plant coffee. Do those two characters sound familiar? Ever see OUT OF AFRICA? Karen is the character Meryl Streep played, and Denys was played by Robert Redford. (It interesting to note, that Beryl was never mentioned in Karen Blixen's book.) If you're a fan of Karen Blixen's work, you might enjoy this novel, for insight into Karen as "The Other Woman". If you are interested in equestrian subjects, you'll enjoy this, finally, if you have an interest in feminism, you might find it interesting to see how women battled to be accepted by a men's world, in the early 20th century.

A good summary of a fairly good book about a remarkable woman
By Charles A. Ray
Circling the Sun is a novelized account of the life of Beryl Markham, a woman who broke all the rules for women of her era. Circling the Sun by Paula McLain: Summary & Analysis by Instaread is an unofficial analysis, summary and review of McLain’s book, summarizing the whole work, identifying and introducing the key characters, and analyzing the themes and style.
After reading this summary, which itself had a small number of typos and grammatical gaffes (but, not so bad as to interfere with reading it), I decided against getting the full book. That was based primarily on the analysis that in fictionalizing Markham’s life, the author left out some of the more sordid details that I believe would have made Markham a more interesting, and certainly a more rounded character. That McLain is an outstanding author is not left to doubt, and it seems on balance a good book, at least based on this summary and analysis.
This, by the way, is the benefit of these short summaries; they point out things that a reader would otherwise have to pay for the whole book to discover—much to his or her chagrin and dismay on occasion.
Thank you Instaread for all that you do for readers.
