This Book Gets a Standing Ovation!

This little gem of a book is chock full of facts, personages, and events contained within the marvellous phenomenon known as The Enlightenment. It could rightfully be considered an encyclopedia of sorts.
The book begins with the first stirrings of the Enlightenment (17th century), and ends with the French Revolution. In between is a treasure trove of information, with all subjects brought into discussion adequately addressed.
If you are curious about the Enlightenment, if you have a scholastic assignment pertaining to same, or if you (like myself) need a solid yet entertaining beginner's stepping-stone to further Enlightenment studies then THIS BOOK IS FOR YOU.
By far the best in the "Introducing" series published by Icon/Totem. The author made only one mistake in the book: A section entitled "The End of the Enlightenment." To the contrary -- the Enlightenment is still alive!
Long live the Enlightenment!

An Enlightened Concept for an Enlightened Era

Introducing books are my secret indulgence. Of course I read books that don't have pictures (Alice (of Wonderland fame) would find that dull), but these books give you a quick introduction into subjects you may not want to take time to read a 500 page book about. (I know: A preposition is a word you should never end a sentence with.)

Introducing the Englightement is one of the most interesting of these - and I strongly recommend reading Introducing Empirisism immediately after it - because it brings a number of thinkers together and shows their influence on each other - whether they championed or opposed them -in ways not brought out in school or anywhere else I've come across. I was surprised at a number of such links in this particular book (I am not a professional philosopher though).

It's hard to tire of the format - though at times you wish they would tell you more - but there is a list of books for further reading - though sometimes the books are British and I think we have just a good publications here in the Colonies. I've read a number of books in this series and have several (including Introducing Existenialism) for future reading, but this book is seminal - it may cause you to read a number of the others - or even to pull that 500 page tome off the shelf!

Quite enlightening - pity about the pictures

One of the benefits of this series of books is that the illustrations give you an idea of what the protagonists looked like. From Krauze's drawings we learn that the thinkers of the Enlightenment were all misshapen freaks with a strong family resemblance.

The text, on the other hand, is very good. It gives the bare facts necessary for a framework for further study, plus some valuable insights such as placing the roots of the movement in England's Glorious Revolution of 1688. Names, dates and book titles are all here to give you a concise, solid introduction to the movement. There may well be better books out there at the price, covering similar ground, but this is a painless introduction, with enough facts to be worth keeping for reference. It would have been so much better if the illustrations had contributed rather than detracted.

Highly Recommend this book for the Beginner, Novice and Pro!

EXCELLENT for the beginner (like myself) or the "pro" ! I am attempting to make an "emergency" lighting solar system project for my home and this book has "ALL" the information I needed to understand the basics of "what" is going on and how to proceed to build my project .I used to watch youtube videos to try to gain knowledge of "how to" and found that "alot" of these videos are miss leading and do NOT have the correct information on how to make a descent solar system !. The Author, (Mr. Romero ) hits the nail on the head with explaining everything thoroughly from start to finish and gives great insight into solar systems and how they "correctly" work. He also explains the math and has basic formulas for figuring out correct loads, wire sizes etc....which makes building a solar project easy.
I thoroughly enjoyed the read and "HIghly" recommend this book to anyone that wants to learn and build their own solar projects

I have always been a Big Fan of Lambos more so than Ferrari since I was a kid,specifically the Countach of the 80s of which I grew up with as Most 80s and 90s Kids did.(Then the Diablo of Course)This book includes the Countach Models as well as Another model just as dear to me or more so the Miura(one picture of the Miura Jota only however)and it's versions,as well as the First Lamborghinis,The History whether Legend or fact of how Mr.Lamborghini Really decided to jump into the business,even though he was already a successful businessman so perhaps as the author points out it was more of a business decision.The First Models such as the 350 and 400 models,the personalities such As Giotto Bizzarrini(of particular interest to me)Bob Wallace and others.The Designers,engineers all the way to the current Asterion(Not shown but Which most are aware of,Despite it being a "Hybrid" Supercar or Hypercar which is silly and Hybrids are not the in thing among real gearheads.)The Different owners up to the now Current AUDI ownership and The Hurracan which sadly is based much on Audi's Underpinnings.The book is lavishly illustrated with period photos as well as behind the scenes pictures all to please even the most discriminating enthusiast whether or not they are familiar Lamborghini fanatics or have a passing interest,The Lamborghini is a Legend and despite much disinformation out there and plenty of material this book is a welcome addition and a refreshing take on the History of the Brand's hypercars.

Gorgeous book...

I have been in love with American muscle cars for as long as I can remember. There is just something about the lines and the power of those cars that speak to me and always have. I have built a virtual fantasy garage if you will of cars that I would own. However, I would also sneak in a little sleek Italian super car into that fantasy collection of mine.

That is why I absolutely love the book Lamborghini Supercars 50 years From the Groundbreaking Miura to Today’s Hypercars. The introduction starts out with an except from an interview with Ferruccio Lamborghini that tells the story about where he got the idea to make a car. He had purchased a Ferrari and while he loved driving it he found that when he drove the car hard he had problems with the clutch slipping. He had to have the clutch regularly rebuilt and finally got tired of it so he went to talk to Enzo Ferrari about his car only to be told “Lamborghini, you may be able to drive a tractor but you will never be able to handle a Ferrari properly.” Which he states is when he decided embark on the endeavor to create the “perfect” car.

The rest they say is history- a visual history presented lovingly in this book. Starting with the Miura P400 known as the first mid-engine Supercar and moving on to the Countach (my personal favorite), to the last true original Lamborghini - the Diablo. It goes into all the supercar models after Audi acquired Lamborghini including the Murcielago, the Gallardo, the Reventon of 2008, the 2011 Aventador and all the way to the sleek Huracan of today. The book the book gives the history of each design as well as the states of the different models along with gorgeous photos of each machine in various angles and colors. Each of the most popular models has quick stats of each car. The cars are stunningly presented and I have to say - I might not like green cars (they are my least favorite color of car) but the gorgeous Murcielago photos in this book made me have second thoughts about green cars.

The physical book itself is a beautiful large 224 page 10.2 x 1 x 12.5 inch hardcover book filled with color photography and has a forward by Fabio Lamborghini

The photography of this book is top notch. Photographer James Mann brings the cars not just to live but is able to highlight the sleek rocket-like lines on the Lamborghinis to bring the speed to the pages of this book. James man is known to be one of the world’s leading car and motorcycle photographers and his work really shines in his book. His work has appeared with in and on the covers of more than 50 books and provided more of his stunning automotive visuals on and in many magazines including Classic and Sports Car, CAR Magazine, Forza, and Automobile magazines. At 133 pages there isn't a lot of room to waste and, to the author's credit, waste isn't apparently in his lexicon. Each chapter deals with a specific part of a surveillance operation and broken down into various elements, each with a number of concise points to remember. That's pretty much it: but believe me there is a wealth of information, just presented in very few words.

This is not a 'how to' manual. And, as should be evident from the title, it is an accompaniment to a training regime, a guide for an instructor, or a reminder to experienced surveillance operators.

There is nothing negative I can say about this book. Definitely an A+ as far as I'm concerned.

EVERY surveillance operator should have a copy.

Berk Writes About The Interesting Journey Of The RX3

I bought this book because I bought one of the first RX3’s off the boat and I love it. The bike has been great (excellent handling, reliable, good looking, etc) and it was reassuring to read about this diverse group of riders going 5,000 miles with no problems. Or more specifically, no motorcycle related problems.
The backstory of how the bike found its way to America was quite interesting and we are lucky that Steve and his wife (owners of CSC, the outfit that imports the bike) were willing to take the risk to bring it here. Joe also describes the pricing policy of most motorcycle dealers and why CSC is doing things differently. This rolls over to the maintenance side of things too. Great insight into the retail motorcycle industry from someone who has been around bikes for a long time.
If you are a rider who has bought into the philosophy of more cc’s means a better Adventure bike then you need to read this book. There is so much you can do with this 250 cc machine that it’s hard to justify the cost for one of those big name, big price bikes. Joe makes real world comparisons more than a couple of times in the book.
The planning and execution of the trip was portrayed well and the bikes performed amazingly. This would have been an epic ride to go on and Joe does a great job in visually illustrating the scenery and all the National Parks they visited. Joe also describes quite well the reactions of the visitors from China and Columbia to their experiences each day.
The group dynamics thing throughout the trip was fun to read about. It’s inevitable that when you throw a dozen people together for a couple of weeks stuff is gonna happen…and it did. But everyone came out ahead in the end. Get the book, it’s a great read.
It looks like Joe is going to do a similar ride in Columbia with a couple of guys from this ride and I hope he writes about that trip too.

Great book for a great bike !!!!!!

I also own this motorcycle and think it is a very well built bike. I was going to say" for the price" but regardless of price , 6200 miles later, it's still very well built . This book was very informative. I was aware of some things mentioned in it as I've read lots of the forums peculiar to this bike , but this book actually gave me new info about how it came about, the behind the scene details that I found very interesting. Helped me to understand my bike and the importer CSC philosophy better . Joe has a great way of writing , keeping your interest and making you smile while reading because most of us have been there, done that, in the stories he mentions. I would definitely recommend the book to anyone considering buying the RX3 as a preview and way to get to know it before it arrives to you. Great read.

In all honesty if you are buying this prior to owning a Zongshen RX3 250 consider yourself forewarned .... this book may lead to the expenditure of about 4 grand on it's subject matter - the RX3!!! The book is an excellent story of how the American RX3 came to be and it's first 2 public shakedown endurance rides. More than that it tells the story of a small company meeting a much desired niche in American & Canadian motorcycling dreams, a smaller sensible ADV bike of superior quality at fair pricing with top shelf customer service. It is bringing together a brotherhood of like minded riders in adventure and dream fulfillment. Can't thank Steve and company enough for the willingness to take the chance and without doubt can't thank Joe enough for tell the story! I hope it isn't over - not by a long shot.

Memorize Book - get a 5.

I had 5 other AP classes that semester and AP GOV't class quickly became a
place to finish up homework in other classes. I barely payed any attention to lectures and honestly never really got time to read the book. I became concerned when second semester rolled along and the AP Exams were looming. I got the Princeton Review book and basically read the whole book through in about a week before the exam. I learned a semester's worth of information in about 3-4 hours. Trust me it's possible, the AP exam can test you on only so much. You don't have to religiously memorize this book but you have to know the book quite well. The test was notoriously easy and I got a 5 - end of story. As long as you come just a step short of memorizing this book, you WILL get a five - even if you never paid attention in class. Don't tell me that this book is not enough - it's written by the chief AP Grader for crying out loud - it gives you just exactly what you need to know, nothing more - don't go with Barrons and spare yourself extra time and effort.

I recommended that my AP US Government students buy this book ...

I recommended that my AP US Government students buy this book because I think it is the best with regards to the curriculum alignment. I especially think that the practice tests are more aligned with real AP multiple choice exams than 5 Steps.

Two things that could be better:
1. Some of the information (even in the practice tests) is random and not likely to appear on the AP exam.
2. The free response questions are not configured or scored the way real AP free response questions are done. They aren't written in the format that is always used. A student is much better off completely disregarding the free response questions in the book and using the actual, released FRQS (plus rubrics) found on the Collegeboard website.

Forget 5 steps to a 5, here is 1 step to a 5: Get this book!

Impeccable. Need I say more?
Whether you need a study guide to use in conjunction with the class, or last minute resource for the AP exam, this is the book for you. While I didn't use it for the former, I did use it extensively for the latter. Thus, this review will speak of my experience using this book to study for the AP US Government and Politics Exam.
Unlike the AP textbook you'll likely receive in class, this book is terse and to the point. Though it's pithy, it still contains EVERY key term you need to know for the exam; all of which are in bolded text and include a structured, well-organized outline of what each term entails. For example, the chapter on the Judiciary delineates the process by which the Supreme Court hears an appellate case and breaks it down into distinct steps. Not only does each step elucidate the seemingly esoteric process, but it also catalogs the salient terms of each step. Such terms include: amicus curae brief, rule of four, writ of certiorari, judicial conference, solicitor general, attorney general, etc. The point is, this book provides a comprehensive guide to the course yet still manages to exclude any futile or excess information.
As for the 2 included practice exams, I would contend that their rigor is on par with that of the actual AP exam. After having thoroughly read and memorized the book—a process which took about 8 straight hours— I took each practice exam. First of all, time was not an issue at all: I finished each test in 15 of the allotted 45 minutes. Secondly, I scored 59/60 on the first test, and 60/60 on the second one.
My only issue with this book is, as another review previously stated, the practice exams' free response questions are not really representative of those of the real exam's. However, because obtaining actual past free responses is as easy as going to collegeboard.com, this issue is not really an issue at all.
Though I only took this test a few days ago and have, therefore, not yet received my score, I am COMPLETELY confident that i earned a 5. Thus, for all you students enticed by the prospect of earning a 5, look no further: this book is the panacea to your studies, the only tool you need to succeed.

My land surveying career began several decades ago while attending Albuquerque Technical Vocational Institute in New Mexico and has traversed many states such as Alaska, Arizona, Utah and Wyoming. I am a Professional Land Surveyor in Arizona, Utah and Wyoming. I am an appointed United States Mineral Surveyor and a Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Certified Federal Surveyor. I have many years of computer programming experience related to surveying. This book is dedicated to the many individuals that have helped shape my career. Especially my wife Cindy. In this book, Professor McGrail’s study of European Water Transport (published in 2014) is extended to Egypt, Arabia, India, Southeast Asia, China, Australia, Oceania and the Americas. Each chapter presents a picture of ancient boat building and seafaring that is as accurate and as comprehensive as it is now possible to achieve. The early rafts and boats of those regions were, as in Europe, hand-built from natural materials and were propelled and steered by human muscle or wind power. This volume ranges in time from the Prehistoric period to today when a number of such traditional craft continue to be built.

In Egypt, not only have accounts, models and illustrations of ancient rafts and boats survived, but also a number of early vessels have been excavated – some dated as early as the 3rd Millennium BC. In regions such as the Americas, on the other hand, where few ancient craft have been excavated, we are able to draw on accounts and illustrations compiled, from the 16th century AD onwards, by European seamen and explorers. In most regions of the world a variety of water transport has been built, limited only by the raw materials available. On the island of Tasmania, however, an early rise in sea levels cut contacts with Australia, leaving Tasmanians with simple types of Stone Age water transport that survived in use until Europeans ‘discovered’ them.

Worldwide, much remains to be learnt about early water transport by excavation, and by ethnographic studies of those traditional rafts and boats that have survived.

About the Author
Professor Seán McGrail served in the Royal Navy as a seaman officer from 1946 to 1968; from 1952 he flew as a pilot in the Fleet Air Arm. He graduated with a BA at the University of Bristol in 1971, and in 1978 gained a Ph.D. at University College, London with a thesis on The Logboats of England and Wales. In 1988 he was awarded a D.Sc. by the University of Oxford. Professor McGrail was Chief Archaeologist at the National Maritime Museum, Greenwich from 1974 to 1986, and Professor of Maritime Archaeology in the Institute of Archaeology, Oxford from 1986 to 1993. Since 1993 he has been Visiting Professor at the University of Southampton.

Would you believe whaling from bark canoes? Supposedly simple boats were fairly complex technologies.

This is an excellent introduction. I have a hard time deciding on four or five stars and decided that because of all the unusual information, five. The writing is fairly good, but it is evident that the author really knows the material. There are useful maps, but diagrams and photographs are excellent at helping the reader visualize what the text discusses. It covers most places outside Europe but does not cover Africa, except for Egypt, a sizable gap. McGrail discusses Egypt, Arabia (in this he includes essentially the whole Middle East),India, Australia, China, Southeast Asia, Oceania and the Americas. The book is heavy on nautical terms, but nothing intimidating.

For me, the best sections of the book are the sections on India, Australia and the Americas. The reader can select which chapters to read or read it through.

There are some surprises. I had no idea that peoples native to Australia had boats of various sorts. I knew American natives had some sizable boats, but he says the Micmac of New Brunswick hunted whales and seals at sea from bark boats, and that log rafts could make sea passages of 1,500 miles (from Lima to Panama). Log rafts were not always so simple; they could be sailed and carry substantial cargo. He describes log rafts, hide boats, buoyed rafts, sewn boats and more. The technology is addressed throughout the book, a bit of the construction, navigation, propulsion and a little about provisioning.
